Battle for spectrum in SA

Adding to the demand for spectrum, Eskom has also indicated that it wants a bigger slice of the spectrum pie for use in its “smart grid” deployment in the country.

This includes two 10 MHz channels in the valuable 800 MHz band, after the digital TV switchover – effectively one-third of the spectrum range – as well as in the 1.4/1.5 GHz bands.

No.No.No.

I don't know if we will need the spectrum if Eskom gets their price increases and the price increases they will need to create a grid that has more network capacity than our national consumer ADSL network.

Surely Eskom should use other ECN providers to build a redundant network for the smart grid - between Telkom, Broadband Infraco, Sentech, Vodacom and MTN surely the government has enough parastatals\ semi-parastatals.
