The official Battlefield Heroes website offers the first official details on Battlefield Heroes, the upcoming free to play installment in the Battlefield series of multiplayer military shooters. Here's an excerpt:

In January 2007 I started work at DICE, with a fairly broad goal of heading up new, more experimental projects for the studio. After a month or two of settling in, I found myself in the office of Sean Decker, the Battlefield franchise Executive Producer. He began talking about the games industry in South Korea. That market has become well known in the past few years for creating a new way of delivering games, where they are free to download and play, but where a small number of users pay for inexpensive items called 'micro-transactions', which provide revenue for the project. EA has a FIFA game over there that is doing very well.

have always been keen on trying new things in the online gaming area, and this way of delivering games struck us as pretty interesting, so we started wondering if this might also work in the western world. I volunteered to lead the project - the direction I got from Sean at this stage was (if I remember correctly) 'historical feel', 'existing technology', 'level up one character?' and 'heroic'. I've posted a scan of my first page of notes here. A few people at DICE had previously been working on concepts and ideas for this project over the previous months and I met with them and began working through some more notes as I fleshed out the high-concept.

I can't wait for this, I think it's going to be fun, alot of people will not like it, but I'm betting that alot of TF2 peepz will enjoy it :D so you can expect the servers to be FULL!

At first i thought this was a cheap ass ripp off, from TF2, but this game looks like a beauty, and the art is entirely unique:) and its free! But i heard a rumour that it will only have US and VSA support or something?

Ummm so are we going to be able to play it now? Last I heard it was going to be only Europe and America?

Battlefield Heroes Not Available Outside Of US & Europe

Battlefield Heroes looks interesting! Pity, then, that
I wont' be able to play it, as EA have announced that
despite being a free download, the game won't be available
to players in places like Australia, New Zealand,
Japan...South Africa, and...oh, Mexico. Anywhere
outside the US and Europe, actually. No reason was
given for the snub, so we're tossing up whether it's
something to do with the title's in-game advertising
or simply EA waking up on the wrong side of their big,
cushy corporate bed all week.

Australia & Others Will Miss Out On Battlefield Heroes

2)Australia & Others Will Miss Out On Battlefield Heroes
If you were looking forward to trying out DiCE's Battlefield Heroes,
the free-to-play game announced by EA earlier this week, think again.
EA Australia has informed us that the game will not be available to
audiences outside of the US and Europe.
Which, last time I checked the atlas, included Australia.

Considering the game will be downloadable, I'm not exactly sure how
the publisher will enforce this, but I'm sure it'll find a way.

EA was unable to explain why the game won't be released outside the
aforementioned territories, but the words "for the moment" were tossed
around, so we may see the title eventually. Just not right now.

More news as we get it, but my guess is EA wants to trial the free-to-play
model before throwing it out to the world at large

They said the same thing about WoW. Its probably a quality of service thing, ie if you are outside the region they can't promise anything

Cant wait for this. Something else to play than TF2 :D
