Battling with Gout constantly

For some reason, I haven’t had a gout attack in about six months (and I didn’t really change my eating or drinking habits). But fookit… Had one in my ankle last time, and the missus wasn’t home.

REALLY kak trying to get to the pharmacy (ours has the best gout kit) while having to drive a manual car… Steering wheel was slightly bent by the time I arrived. amazing how many times one pushes in the clutch

And on that day, i didnt have a extra gout kit in the house..

My gout is so bad Puricos does not work, have tried few times. My acid blood count is around 6.5

Also you playing a dangerous game drinking anti inflammatory every day. You either gonna get an ulcer or your kidneys will pack up.

Water and more water is the best advice, no coffee or other drinks. Also stay away from sugar and starches. Wheat, mushrooms and organ meat. Also things like Marmite and Bovril.

The next option I am trying is fasting. Theory is not eating and just water every second day so you kidneys can get rid of the acid and nothing new coming in.

I battle with almost continuous bouts of Gout. We maybe eat red meat once a week and I will on some weekends enjoy a beer.
I feel like I'm living on anti-inflamatory pills recently. Has gotten worse over the last year.
Does anybody also suffer from this and what do you do to keep it under control.
Puricos wasn't helping me although i've heard you can go up to major doses if needed.

My doctor went the other way and told me to take colchicine daily. So i take 1mg every day. So far so good BUT if i abuse it i know what's coming. Ive had gout since my early 30s which was weird.

Also red meat is only 1 player. The following are triggers for me if i over-indulge:
- Spinach
-Mushrooms
-Pork
-Lamb
-Soft drinks*
-Strong tomato based soups/sauces/snacks

*Apparently only sugar soft drinks cause gout, not sugar-free. BUT that said i have noticed a slight spike in gout pain when i've had a particularly good run at sugar-free drinks on a weekend. Obviously some alcohols do too.\

for an emergency and if you cannot take the pain off, nothing - and i mean NOTHING beats a good old jab in the backside with a cortisone+voltaren shot. I can have the worst gout attack and 2 hours later i can play soccer lol. It not only takes away the gout. but i actually feel better, happier, my mood improves lol. My Dr knows me when i need it now i phone and say i want that magic little shot that takes all my problems away lol.

I can write a book of best and worst places to get gout.
Wrist and fingers, not to bad, you can walk and go on with life only pain is when you use hand. Biggest problem is wiping your ass :p
Knee. This is pretty bad. You cant make it straight or bend it to much. Good thing is you can manage to walk with just a little pain although a bit wobble with the stiff knee. Driving car, getting in and out of car or sitting on chair or toilet and you have to bend knee is very difficult and painful.
Ankle Also pretty bad, but manageable. Can walk with a bit of pain by not moving ankle to much.
Big toe, also to too bad, can walk with pressure on heel and keep toe in the air. Putting on closed shoes is a bit of a problem.
Bridge of you foot. For me the worst. can almost not walk as any movement or pressure is directly painful. Also there is so many small bones and joints in the bridge, when you drink pills the crystals just get loose and move to the next joint in the bridge and get stuck there.

Tomatoes do it for me. I eat just a little chutney or cooked tomatoe and my feet swell up like my dick at the sight of a fat older woman.

Years ago I had kidney stones and had some old surgeon professor. He told me if I had to drink soft drinks, try to drink clear stuff like Sprite and definitely stay away from dark stuff like Colas as the colorants are bad for you.
I have found the same apply to gout. Sprite does not really trigger anything, but having a few Colas and I know I have gout the next day.

ooh, when it is a big one...... if the bed sheet touches your ankle ...

you sheet bricks

This brings back some (painful) memories.

My wife almost fell off the bed reaching for her sidearm when I yelped in pain the first time.

Prescription. .....and ask your dr to prescribe prednisone (cortisone) and anti inflammatory for the first week or so as Puricos will cause all hell to break loose when you start taking it while having gout. In the end it works to a large extent though.

Edit, avoid starches, especially bread and yeast containing foods, and sugar as those trigger inflammation.

Yeah good idea to get your doctor to give you a monthly script for Prednisone.

It’s cheap as chips and sorts out a short term flare of pretty much anything very quickly.

If you end up not needing it you’ll always have spare in the cupboard for when you do.

But OP also get a real diagnosis, easy to assume it’s gout from what the internet says but there’s a myriad of inflammatory related diseases.

Ive had continuous gout attacks for 6 months then started Puricos and never had an attack in 5 years and dont have to worry what i eat or drink . If medication does not work then you will have to change your diet. Problem is that we all have different triggers that set off these gout flares.

As others recommend, Puricos.

Initially it made my gout much worse, and even spread to my other foot but the doctor said this will probably happen.

A month later, it felt like I never had gout. It's chronic though, so every day.

The go-to strong medication I know of is prescription-only Cataflam, but also not regularly or it can do harm. Mainly used for Arthritis I see.

Are people brave enough to ask the Dr what to prescribe? It would feel very awkward to me.

My approach is that my health is primarily my responsibility. If something is wrong, I research the condition and treatments so I can intelligently discuss it with the dr. I ask about the different options and ask for specific medicines but with the dr's approval that we agree it is appropriate. So, I would usually ask for medicines by name/chemical composition. Prednisone is the only of its kind appropriate for this purpose as far as I know, so OP can ask for it by name without fear of embarrassment (or ask the dr for similar)

Anti inflammatory is strange, I have had doctors prescribe the strongest ones for me and they warm me to only take them when I'm at home and not planning to do anything. But they were meh and did not help much.
For me personally the ones that work best is K-Fenak that you can buy at any pharmacy without prescription.

We have this one doctor that always have this watery eyes, looks like he is on drugs or painkillers. I love going to him as I just tell him what to do mostly.
I once had a huge gout attack in my ankle and could barely walk or drive the car, and had a busy day with work left and then children sports the evening. I convinced him to inject cortisone directly into my ankle joint, a procedure they normally would only do under anesthetics.

I would say @TheChamp can rest his case.
