Hi all. I need a bit of advice regarding my company using me for their BBBEE verification.

I have been working for this company for the last 6.5years. Since 2018 I have been asked to attend BBBEE verification audits and was placed on annual Mentorship Programmes for uplifting. This for the company to keep their BBBEE status.

Just for reference I am a South African Coloured.

Should u get rewarded for this? Maybe profit share or some sort of additional remuneration.

I have been promised a share of the Trust under which the company operates for the last few years, but nothing has been made official yet.

The company has been treating me well except for this issue. I am remunerated with a market related salary with normal perks.

My issue is I have heard of people getting decent profit share and additional bonuses for their help in the company maintaining its BBBEE status.

The company had had about a 2 to 3 year slump but this year it will be booming again. And it might be the right time to approach the CEO.

How much work has this actually entailed? Especially if the audits occur during working hours, I'm not sure what you're expecting compensation for. Also not so lekker for the non-BBBEEE contributors who aren't getting a bonus because their skin colour isn't helping the company get their status. Dunno...seems like you have a good job and are well paid, I'd personally leave it at that rather than ruffle feathers for a bit of cream on top.

I get what you're saying.

The company is scoring some great work because of their BBBEE status. And I am the only previously disadvantaged individual at the company.

How many people are at this company that you get to influence their BBBEEE status?

Is your only purpose there to be a BEE?

We are about 15 employees.

It is not my only purpose at the company. I would call it an additional role. I probably spend 1 to 2 hours a month filling in forms.

What happens at the audit? You walk in and the auditors confirm that you’re not white?

Are you benefiting from the mentorship thing (notwithstanding the fact that you aren’t being paid for it)? Or are they just doing it to tick boxes?

Just to tick boxes.
The auditor just confirms my identity, salary and asks questions about the mentorship programme.

Stop being entitled. You already got a job just for your skin colour and now you want even more benefits? Just be grateful they didn’t hire a black woman and score an even higher BEE status.

Lol. I am just asking. I would be working for this company even without this BBBEE thing.

My BBBEE status was not what got me hired and it is not what is keeping me at the company.

Tell them you found a new mentor and you’re only willing to continue if they hire him to work with you.

Then appoint your uncle.

You’re now getting the extra cash you wanted.

Yeah they are ripping you off, You are clearly a VIP in the company, you should be getting a chauffeur driven BMW 7 series and a mansion in Hyde park.

Does anyone here actually have any advice? Or is this a troll forum?

Thanks saor. I'll just leave it rather that ruffle a few feather.

My one colleague once told me. "A squeaky wheel gets oiled." And at the moment, not of us are ruffling any feathers.

Sorry, we can’t help you since there aren’t many BEE people here. We’ll direct them to the thread though once they’re back from the ANC conference.

Sit down with your bosses and tell them you’re not benefiting as much as you want from the mentorship thing. Give them specifics about why it’s not working in a constructive way. Preferably, your suggestions shouldn’t cost any money.

Guys I’m white so I don’t contribute to the BBBEE status of my company. In fact I probably push it in the wrong direction.

Should I be penalized for this? I have a stable position and get a market-related salary, but I’m not being actively punished for being white. Is this correct? Should I bring this up or would that just ruffle too many feathers?

@AutumnCruizer
Are you benefiting from this mentorship program and does it create additional opportunities now or in the future?

If they say no, what are you options, will you resign and how replaceable you are?
Are you prepared for no and could all of this backfire?

I am not really benefiting from the Mentorship Programme. This programme is more applicable to a junior staff member.

I will not resign if they say no. It will not be easy to replace me. I haven't decided to approach the CEO yet. I am just enquiring if there are any reasons to take this further.
