Location
South Africa.
If someone has a contact in an overseas location who also happen to have BBM, I assume that all messages sent from South Africa via BBM to the overseas phone are still free?!?

I'm not referring to a South African with roaming enabled, because I know that one is charged for the data connection @ roaming costs for that particular country.

Anyone know of a definitive answer?!?

BBM Free,
connectivity to BIS not free

So if I take my BB with me to say, Tanzania, I can't BBM for free anymore?

Get a sim card over there, load data on it,BBM is linked to the phone, not the phone number :)

Oh my crap. Look at these roaming data rates. What are the guys smoking?

Zone Standard Data Rates per MB | Super-Saver Data Rates per MB (Please see table on selected countries below)**
Neighbouring countries | R 51.20 | R 17.50
Sub-Saharan Africa | R 102.40 |R 17.50
Rest of World | R 128.00 |R 17.50

You guys are not reading properly.

He's asking - if you have a friend who LIVES overseas and has a blackberry with BBM, in their own country, not on roaming - can you BBM each other for free?
The answer is yes.

You can BBM anyone anywhere in the world if you have their pin and they're on the BIS network (whether roaming from SA, connected via local wifi, or they're in their home country on their own carrier).

I read perfectly well thank you. Your explanation is very erudite, when the simple answer I gave was correct. I did however correct another poster's misunderstanding as well

Oops. Yes - doesn't matter where the BBM is sent to, it's all free.

Thanks PsyWulf, then AniV and finally Speedster.

Based on the information provided that BBM is a free messaging platform and assuming my friend overseas has a Blackberry, this is even better than Skype's SMS option, because it doesn't cost anything & it is real-time and their should be no delays or delivery problems. In addition, with BBM's ability to send sound, picture & video clips it is a great platform to use.

I have however heard that there are sometimes delivery issues with BBM (locally & internationally) - so if it's an NB message maybe ask the receiver to confirm receipt.

That's what's awesome about BBM.

You can see when the message was successfully sent, when it was delivered to the recipient device, and when the message was read.
Tick mark, Tick mark with D, Tick mark with R.

Just one observation: I recently returned from Germany. I only used BBM and Whatsapp and our friends at VC charged me over R700 for this!!!!!

Whatsapp on BB is NOT free. Ask my wife. Neither is a load of other stuff. One day she decided to do some audio streaming and at the end of the month received a whopping bill.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

BBM can be slow when sending to other countries, have had a up to 10min wait for my BBM messages to be delivered to AUS, but to turkey they went through instantaneously.

I thought Whatapp on BB was free?

Streaming I know, isn't

Whatsapp is free, streaming media is not.

WhatsApp just uses data - data goes through BIS. WhatsApp is supposed to be free. If it isn't, there's something wrong.

Streaming media is NOT free. It does not go through BIS. You will be charged or have airtime deducted for things like Youtube.

If you go overseas with your BB and you're on roaming, you will be charged the usual exorbitant data costs like everybody else. Your BIS does not work when you are overseas. If you have access to Wifi though, your BBM can work through that (Hubby recently went overseas, got on wifi and we were able to BBM each other but when not on Wifi, couldn't BBM me or receive).

Sending international BBMs is slow sometimes, yeah, but still free! :)
