BBM Down again?

lol Vodacom is going to take a tongue lashing on this one from users, no matter how technical peeps try to be the average user sees it as " I am on vodacom and its not working, but my uncle on cellc is" - hope this is sorted soon my life and business is on my BB lucky I have an ipad for emails also with cell-c.

Working but very slow on CellC, (intermittent connectivity) I updated my display picture but takes long to show.

Which APN do you guys use?

Yeah, but whatsapp shouldn't need BIS, it should be able to work without it...

That's not how Blackberry's work. Whatsapp works with BIS, unless your configure a manual APN on your phone and use a data bundle, or pay oob rates.

Great start to 2013.
Wonder what Alexandra Zagury has to say about it (insert obligatory pic of her here as per MyBB tradition).

Please clarify something here for me. I am not a BB user, never was been one, so I am not THAT clued up on all things BIS. If BIS is down for some reason, can one not use normal cellular Internet for BBM, WhatsApp and browsing?

You can use internet & whatsapp by manually configuring an APN, using data bundles or airtime, but you won't be able to use BBM.

So people complaining about BIS and wanting to jump ship to Android or iPhone for WhatsApp can just change the APN and use their current phones for this? So when BIS is down, you cannot really say you are cut off?

Exactly. The problem is that most people (and I include people working for the service providers!) don't know how to do this.

LOL so basically they just cannot wait to get a new phone that can do what they can do on their current phones anyway :p

I fail to understand your question. People choose to move away to Android and iPhone because you have super phones in comparison to the most expensive BB. BIS is an internet service that costs a fixed amount per month for uncapped on device browsing, hence the reason I have a BB. It's cheap communication, that's why I chose it, because I can afford it.

Yeah well my question is simple. Aside from the free Internet being down, if you change the APN, you can still access the Internet as you would if you has another brand of phone?

Yes, with limitation on what BB's offer. For instance, my BB Protect won't work (no backup of contacts etc.) no BBM, which is in my humble opinion way faster and superior to Whatsapp (I have both, but BBM 90% of the time). So the answer is yes, but then you could just as well buy a cheapy Nokia to access the Web and not a BB.
