I would really like to know why you prefer whatsapp over BBM. I used it a while back, magically seemed to have contacts in my list that I forgot was in my phone book and it didn't seem to integrate with the rest of the Blackberry as well. However, it did allow cross-platform chatting which is sometimes more important than niceness.
Both have per-message delivery/read indicators which is great and rules out many other chat applications.
WhatsApp doesn't have read notifications. Only delivered to server and delivered to device.
i don't know what your using, but with mine... if i send my girlfriend a message, it gets one tick for delivered... 2nd tick when she reads it.

What are those green checkmarks next to my messages?
We are glad you asked. These green checkmarks are actually very important since they function as message delivery acknowledgement indicators. Here is what they mean:
-message successfully delivered to the server.![]()
-message succesfully delivered to the device of the chat partner. (note: this does not indicate that message was read, just that it was delivered)![]()
Whatsapp does not tell you when the message has been read.
