BBM for Android, iOS delayed: BlackBerry responds

It sounds like Samsung is trying to tie BBM down for their exclusive use on Android for a period at least. I wonder if that is not the real reason for the delay ... signatures wanted.

This isn’t very clear at all. It seems that the leaked version is being utilised as a scapegoat at the moment. Somewhere down the line I get the impression that BB had certain agreements in place which could not come to realisation at launch time. I cannot see how the leaked version could cause them this much trouble within 8 hours (1.1 million active users), did they not expect demand? Yeah right…

They are even using this as an marketing gimmick:

The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible.

Amazing they missed the deadline and two days late already.

This is my exact same opinion.

I highly doubt if Samsung has anything to do with this.

The fact is, RIM developed the apps, they announced a release date for both and started the rollout. This alone tells me that there were nothing wrong with any of the apps and they were ready to be used.

However, unfortunately (or should I say fortunately for them) someone inside the company leaked the Android app a few days in advance. This, according to them, caused 1.1 million users already installing the app on their devices.

Nothing was wrong on their servers, nothing was reported, until Saturday when they also started rolling out the iPhone app. They never mentioned how many users downloaded the iPhone app in NZ, or even abroad.

I think, the total sheer number of Android users, who already downloaded the app, along with the iPhone users who downloaded the app caused their servers to crash on Saturday. They, subsequently, halted and stopped both apps from being used any further.

Here are my reasons for this:

1. Why announce a launch date for both apps when they have not been completed and tested?
2. Why did they not experience any technical difficulties prior to Saturday on the Android app?
3. Why pull the iOS app when it was working?

This is just some more BS spin-doctoring going on here...

Maybe Samsung made Blackberry a last-minute purchase offer they couldn't refuse....and this 'technical' problem is merely a ruse while they wangle the deal. Speculation of course.

Samsung?

Who TF died and made Samsung the God of Android?

'Esclusive use' BS. Android is supposed to be an open platform to stamp out exactly this kind of behaviour. I thought BBM was being released for ANDROID and not Samsung. Even the opening line of the article states : "BlackBerry said that BBM will soon be available for Samsung customers in Africa".

No they did not.

Buying out RIM or any portion of the company will not happen just like that. Offers like that will first need to go through a large number of channels before they happen. Authorities need to approve such deals. The moment anything like this is filed, the news would flare up and circulate the web immediately.

This did not happen. Nor is there any exclusive agreement between RIM and Samsung.

Just like the MS and Nokia deal right?

Who’s RIM?

Exactly, you can use this as an example.

Rumors on the MS / Nokia deal emerged 2 years ago. These rumors were strongly denied by both companies back then. However, they only started talks.

This year the deal required regulatory as well as shareholder approval. The moment this happened the information came into the public domain.

So, the same applies here, however, there were no rumors going around of a buyout (compared to the Nokia example), so I do not think anything is in the brew here...

Yes, yes, I know that they announced back on the 30th of January that they are officially changing their name to BlackBerry, but this was just another ploy to redesign the company image and try to get it back to their feet.

I know them as RIM - the company that f**ked up Blackberry.

Only pulling your leg :D

You’re right, the odds that Samsung and Blackberry are negotiating a possible agreement, and whatever the case will be is quite low.

I do see it idiotic that BB is stating a Samsung 1st. The Google Play Store should be open to all, cannot see why by any reason the App should be exclusive within a very limited time to the Samsung App store…

Guys, girls... I think a reality check is called for!

So, RIM farked up, and everyone flays them. I am no BB fan, never had one, never had BBM and never will!

Before you carry on throwing abuse at BB, look at the "other" company and its messaging app. Google introuduced Hangouts, "to replace Talk" about 4 months ago. To this day it doesn't work properly. Messages don't get delivered or get lost, it is not possible (on Android) to see if a contact is online. You cannot organise your contact list at all. A voice call (previously simple to make) now requires you to make a video call and then deactivate the video. It is no longer possible to set your status to invisible...

I have NO idea about the relative sizes of the companies, but surely Google should be able to launch a proper app with their resources?
