Why not buy a brand new one for that money?

The Philips range is often on discount for R6500 or so on Takealot which is basically a Saeco with cheaper exterior plastics etc.

I know. Actually had a look at Takealot, and unless I'm blind, I can't seem to find them at those specific prices

Best is to look on Bidorbuy, Gumtree, Facebook Market or Facebook Groups such as Used Coffee Equipment SA. Obviously apply brains when buying online.

Yeh I'm having a look... Avoiding okes who somehow can't provide me a service history, but not sure if they get some sort of paperwork after a service

It's possible people don't do services on these machines as they pretty much entry level. Best is to go check it out yourself and then send in for service or service yourself?

Yep would make sure to go and have a peek myself, make sure everything is working fine. Take some beans with and test, and then do a service. It's the reason I would prefer local (CT) so I can do all that

"Somehow can't"? Do people keep a detailed log of when they clean and/or descale their coffee machines? Mine just tells me when it needs to be done.

I'm not referring about descaling, I'm talking about a full service. Most of the bean to cup machines, you at least need to have it properly serviced, not just a cleaning by descaling it.. if I'm buying 2nd hand, I can't say how many cups it's been through, what the grinder is like etc

Never had mine serviced, never had the need. Depending on the machine, mine’s a delongi, it will in fact tell you exactly the number of cups it has made.

Try keeping a lookout for a sale or something buddy … best option than to buy a second hand one …

You not gonna get that on a cheap domestic machine. No one service their machines. Best is just to do it once you bought it.

Think you might want to consider just buying new.

I am, but in no real rush. I'm just looking about, to see what is out there

Yeah I did also look before I posted. They do tend to come and go.

Wish list these two and just keep an eye on them.

Although that’s a pretty damn food price on the 2200 already.

I can’t comment on every other machine but considering my own I’m not sure what there would be to service.

The manual doesn’t recommend servicing but gives you a full maintenance schedule for removing and cleaning the brew unit and you use the cleaning tablet every so often to remove the grease etc.

There’s even lubricant in the box.

I can’t think how one would service a grinder. It’s either working or dead in which case you replace it entirely.

I guess I'm old fashioned since I use a hand grinder (ceramic, burr), a pot and a plunger.

The family use the Jura E8, it is convenient when I don't have time I guess. Lots of people say my hand ground and brewed coffee tastes better than the machined stuff though.

You can have a machine and still not know how to use it or properly set it up. I use both machine and Chemex, depending on the beans and drink.

We have taken many machines before in for service and/or repairs. Sometimes once every 2 years or whatever, just to make sure that everything is functioning as it should.

Cleaning the machine by descaling, cleaning the brew unit, and other small parts are a weekly thing. We have had times, where the grinder was working, but it wasnt grinding as it should. But as you say, it's it's either a replacement or a fix. Other things like Milk or water not pushing through properly or at all, the heater that heats up water/milk isn't functioning correctly. Those are all bits that gets taken in and looked at and serviced if need be.

But agree, if it's working fine, then a general cleaning etc weekly is all you really need..
