I see an avid Mears fan.
Nobody denies that Mears was a good survival expert. But consideration has to be made for the fact that he's close to 50 now and seems to be eating far too many wild berries.
While he was once a strong, well-built and brilliant bushcraft specialist, he's now an aging fatty. It seems Mears ate all the pies.
I think comparing the two is ridiculous, especially since that was never the point of this thread in the first place. The question was asked whether Bear was really tough (which he is), not whether there was anybody out there who is tougher than he is (which there is).
I dig Survivorman , that guy seems like just an ordinary oke and not some special forces trained guy.
Not as much action and death defying stuff but I feel it's more realistic plus the guy films himself.
He was a survivalist before he got his own show.Polish said:I'm just wondering if Grylls is a real survivalist with an entertaining show, or is he an entertainer with a survivor type show.
Ray Mears is a real survivor man. Mears had a laugh at Grylls and would whip his ass in 5seconds. Even Ray Mears' show is full of tech support but Mears doesn't pretend he's alone over there.
Grylls is also reputed to be SAS but he was only reserve and never actually saw any action.
Ray Mears even called him a boy scout and Grylls admitted himself that Mears is better. If I was lost anywhere in the wild, I'd want to be with Mears not a clown like Grylls.
i.
I agree, that it was never intended to be a "throw an actor into the jungle" type thing cause sooner or later he would die. Which has negative influence on ratings![]()
Bear Grylls summited Everest at 23... he is hardly a clown.
I think you guys have an inflated expectation of what it takes to survive, perhaps he is not that hardcore but he does know what he is doing.
So i watch the Ultimate Survival stories with keen interest.
The way Bear parachutes in, fights his way through dense jungles or blistering deserts, eats maggots or hunts a deer, sleeps in ice caves, crosses quicksand, etc.
All lekker mucho hero stuff, but done in a humble and tactful manner by an expert.
A real hero.
But i cannot help thinking the whole time while he seems to be alone in a world to hurt, there is a whole crew behind him, with camera men, light technicians, make up artists, safety crew, emergency doctors, support staff, blah blah.
Now i understand that there is a small amount of realism involved, and i know he's not completely alone, but is he for real ?
Lots of people have climbed the Everest. Doing so does not make you a survivalist and certainly does not make you not a clown. He had good support and was (is) fit but that's all. Mears on the other hand has more knowlegde about what berries to eat, what plants are poisonous and which can be used as medicine or to ward off malaria mosquitoes etc. He runs a bushcraft school and the guys he trains go on to run their own. You see these Kalahari Bushmen who can find water in some root? They walk around quietly and find their stuff, they don't jump around like idiots. That's survivalism not B-grade Hollywood action hero junk.
If anything Grylls is an action junkie with some survivalist knowledge (which food to gather) patched on, while Mears is the real McCoy but isn't in it to jump into rivers or to fight baby alligators.
He's a down to earth guy and has respect for the locals he runs into. His shows are informative. While Grylls is about gung ho stuff but anyone who was in the military and has recently been to Afghanistan or Iraq and actually saw real action and not some reserve border quard pretend SAS stuff, will know that he's just BSng. Jumping into a river, climbing a rope bridge, etc - that's all part of basic training. While that's no joke, it's something any decent soldier will do and guys who are seeing action probably do it better.
Which is exactly why Mears whips his butt. Mears is chubby but he's fit enough and skilled and as said, if lost I'd want to be with Mears and not Grylls. And yes, even some of the advice Grylls gives is BS (I say from a professional POV).
Perhaps you should simply start a pro-Mears thread instead of throwing your weight around in a pro-Bear one.
Since when was this a pro-Bear one
Title suggests it's open for debate.
