Been hacked

You need to give more details. What happened? How do you know that you have been hacked?

Only reason to panic is if you have pedo porn on it - and then I hope they get you good. Otherwise -= take a breath and explain

Noob. I have been hacked numerious times. I laugh Wipe my C: drive and its buisiness as usual. Takes 10 minutes

Why would ActivateD say that? What pleasure does it give?
Most people are lazy with their backups - and installing takes time. So they have fun freaking people out. There are often non lethal ways of saving your machine if you understand the programs you use,

I would not trust a machine that has been hacked period. There are so many ways a "hacker" can hide a backdoor that makes it hard to find every single hole. I am assuming the user is using Microsoft Windows.
Some of the ways things can hidden
1. Registry
2. Alternative data stream
3. tampering with legitimate binaries or putting their binaries into system32

As for backups, I have been in engagements where the organisation restores from backup only to find those backups have been infected. I take no joy in saying format as its and rather take the files that you know are "clean" to your new system.

Yes but so many people blame strange PC behaviour on "hackers". Until we know the details - we won't know if he/she was really hacked. It could just be software acting funny. Or some glitch.

I have a feeling that it is an email that is doing the rounds claiming that a password was stolen, and they now have access to the PC as well as proof of all the naughty sites he/she visited, and that 800 odd Bitcoins has to be paid else all of this information will be made public to family and friends which will make them laugh.

I got that as well, couldn't help but laugh.

Or picked up a virus and thought it's a hack. But most likely the email.
