Calling all Beetle enthusiasts.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Beetle.

22 June 1934 was the day Herr Porsche agreed to create The People's Car - and is now International Beetle Day, but "The first Volkswagen prototype, the V1 (V = Versuchswagen or Test Car), was ready to go almost exactly a year after the official development brief, Ferdinand Porsche presenting the saloon to an RDA Technical Commission on 3 July 1935. The second test car, a convertible code-named the V2, set out on its maiden trip on 22 December 1935.”

On 20 June 2010, we celebrate the Beetle's 75th anniversary at the SA Mint.

Venue : SA Mint Coinworld, Gateway, Old Pretoria Road

Time from 10am til 3pm

Description of event :

The SA Mint Coinworld annually has a themed festival, and this year has agreed to theme the event on the Beetle's 75th.

There are traditionally antique & collectable stalls, food and refreshments for sale, entertainment etc. This year the collectables will be housed in a marquee, and there will be more stalls than before, including some motoring related ones which will be placed close to the VW display.

There will be an assortment of Beetle 75th commemorative items for sale.

Free Gift : A collectable Beetle 75 token coin will be minted specially for the occasion, and each visitor will receive one free of charge, while stocks last.
Beetle Theme & Involvement

All Beetles and other air-cooled VWs are invited to attend - they can be in any condition.

Herbie owners are requested to lead to various convoys.

All VWs to arrive around 10am - I would suggest that the VWs congregate outside the Mint at about 9:40, because we expect a lot of cars. Display cars (air-cooled VWs) will receive an event sticker at the gate, which qualifies them to park in the display area.

Displays : Special displays are planned for special invite motorsport VWs - Formula Vees, racing Beetles, rally VWs, MK1 Golfs and Herbie replicas.

Air-cooled VWs other than Beetles to park around the edges of the display area, with the Beetles in the centre.

Activities / competitions : VW owners are invited to theme or decorate their cars - the most creative entrants will win prizes. Please bear in mind that certain sporting emblems should not be used.

We already have 3 vouchers from GoldWagen in Midrand, and the SA Mint will be sponsoring prizes - including a tenth ounce Kruger Rand.

I'd like to get more prize sponsors - they don't have to be big or expensive, but they will be greatly appreciated. Any companies interested in getting involved, please contact me.
