I need some help gents, I require a bike to commute from home to varsity(hartbeesport => TUKS) and sometimes to JHB.
does any one have any suggestion max price R50 000

No dude. I'm all for superbikes but as a commuter, rather go with a decent secondhand BMW. Remember to factor in safety gear + helmet into your budget.

when looking @ second hand bikes is there anything to watch out for?

Make sure to see the bike in person. Do the usual inspection; chain, tyres, brakes, marks on the bike indicating a fall, etc.
Get the VIN and license plate number from the seller and in your own time phone the license center to make sure the bike is registered under the guy's name and all fines etc are paid up. I can't quite remember the number.
You'll obviously want to take a look at the odometer to see how much the bike has done.

In general how many km's is too much

It really depends on the model and the type of bike. You'll also use it as a measure on the price. Anything under 15,000km's is very, very good. Anything more than 60,000km's and your bargaining power starts growing rapidly.

Yep. You can get a Honda CBX-250 Twister brand new for well below your budget, leaving you with plenty of money for equipment. Just don't get a Pulsar.

would a 650 kawazaki katana do?,i have a friend who is selling one for R8000-R12000.

PM me if you are interested in his bike.

My advise is not to go for a 250cc 2-stroke. Rather go for a 400cc 4-stroke (CBR / VFR / RVF / RGV / ZXR).

Then, have a look at www.kawasakisa.co.za at their 250cc 4-stroke Ninja Sport. I think it's sells for R46k new, but you can probably negotiate around R42k new.

If I needed a good quality (non grey import) bike direct from the agents for under R50k with full support, this is the bike I would choose. If you can get them down to R42k for the bike, you have more than enough left over for a proper helmet, gloves & leather jacket.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the link

Look at something like a Suzuki sv650. My experience is that if your gonna go through traffic alot something thats light with abit of lowdown torque helps alot. Can't go wrong with a V-twin and they are dependable as well.
