beginner fruit/veg garden

Are those boxes lined with weed cloth or some other fabric?
Not lined with anything but they've been there for 8 years now and I think will probably last a couple more before I need to replace them.

They are shipping crates for car parts I found years ago on gumtree.

BTW raised beds are FANTASTIC for growing vegetables. I saw some for sale at Lifestyle Garden Centre yesterday and this site sells them as well as irrigation systems. If you like you can make your own rain/sun protector with plastic conduit and shade cloth.

Could not be easier.

Here too, these have a built in watering system.

WHY PLANT MATTER RAISED GROW BEDS?

  • Bigger plants & higher yield
  • Plants are able to communicate with each other
So my theory was correct, some MyBB members are grow-bed plants!

I saw that book a while back “Gardening without digging”. Been wanting to get “Teaming with Microbes” for a while. Keeps slipping my mind. I made a point of ordered it now.

Just started my chillies in doors, hoping to give no till and living soil a solid go this season when they go outside.

Building a herb garden this weekend as part of teaching my lazy teenager physical labour awaits him if he does not do well at school (did the same to my exdomestic son when he was in matric and he came in the top 5 in his school after that)

Was going to skip spinach but seeing those beauties, will plant some.

Will post Dick pics (get your mind out of the gutter,my son's name is Richard) of his end result.

I have no idea why they are flourishing as much as they are. No fertiliser and just soil from my property in the planters.

I think the biggest one was over 70cm in length and 30cm in width.

Some of the spinach plants is starting to flower so I'll be harvesting seeds again for next season.

I'm going to mix compost from my composter and grass cuttings that I keep in an old wheelie bin CoCT never fetched (I modded it with some holes :) )

Just came back from Plant n Paint (next door to Timber City) with seedlings and 5 bags of compost - those no toil videos helped me with where I want to go.

Just waiting for the last bit of rain to clear and then my son is doing manual labour.

I saw the new shop but haven't been in there yet. I tried to support Benbel but it just became harder as their stock started to diminish and the writing was on the wall. Last 3 times I needed anything I just didn't even bother to go in there as 99% of the time they never had stock even for basic screws, nails or plumbing pipes and connectors. Not sure exactly how it got so bad for them but I think covid lockdown really affected them. Staff was airways friendly and knew me as would probably grab something there almost every weekend. Now I need to go to builders.

Ok, some Pineapple Dick pics - my son Richard is going to hate his new MyBB sig once he is old enough to join.

The dig

I use to have a nice lawn once but years of neglected has made it as barren as my field of cares.

Mixing in compost

We started to mix in compost from our composter and grass cuttings.

The raised beds
Using vibrecrete panels left over from a gate we installed. Partitioned in two with a slab as a walk way. Threw some good compost on top from the shop and covered with a weed blanket. Will plant tomorrow after I've calculated the correct spacing.

If you guys want to go the no till route or the organic route or any other expert advice, be sure to visit Jamies Garden shop in Somerset West.

So I planted my seedlings, inserted some flower pots for watering and will get some bark in the week.

Will use 10L water to fill the pots. My Aircon is above the bed and produces 5-10L a day that I catch in a bucket.

My Pineapple dick Rick wants to IOT the garden with moisture and temp sensors.

Bark removes nitrogen from soil, nitrogen is used for growth. Do you want to add it for looks or as a cover?
