Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

I had no idea Winter was an Olympic sport.
BTW what's a winter?

Snowboard cross is another of my favourites. Women just finished, men coming up tomorrow morning.

Lindsay Jacobellis won gold (the first gold for the US). Who remembers her from a couple of Olympics ago?

Good for her on finally getting the gold, must have been harsh to live with that "oh so close" for all these years.

It's always hilarious though when any athlete falls when they celebrate too early

My personal favorite one...

These things happen in cycling all the time too. Like when cyclists think they've won and start celebrating a whole lap too early

Happens a lot.

Yup, those are classic, quite a few good videos of American Footballers doing it too.

Mens snowboard cross (including finals) now on till 9:45. :)

Not being a major Winter Olympics fan please forgive my ignorance but having watched some of the luge events I do wish they'd change the scoring system. They reward consistency which is great and all but to me it's not what these events should be about and it just means the last round lacks real drama.
They add up your times for each round to get to a winner, so basically the guy in first place at the end kinda plays it safe and as long as they don't mess up they win. I'd rather you lose someone each round, last round winner takes all.

It think it works perfectly as is. The fastest overall and most consistent guy wins, as it should be. I don't think anyone really takes it easy.

Dunno, for me just reduces the spectacle. Part of the appeal is having a someone pull something dramatic out the hat to produce an upset, this just makes it less likely. I was watching it and even the commentators were like: Joe has plenty in the bag, even though he messed up that third turn he should still take it. Imagine a 100m race where Usain Bolt could finish 2nd in the final and still win overall.
Consistency, that's what leagues and seasons are for.
Anyway I'm not a follower but things like this do make me struggle to get into it.

Well luge (and bobsleigh, skeleton) is a time trial sport so it's not fair to compare it to running where it's all about who crosses the line first. Luge is all about time, nothing else.

Watching some of these events remind me of synchronised swimming and gymnastics - they aren't sports.

For me, a sport is clearly decided by the outcome - not by a group of judges.

First across the line, most points at the end of time, the furthest jump, closest to the target

Figure skating is an example - I don't know what to call it, art, a display, performance - but not sport.

Bobsled begins on Sunday for a week !
Though some of the live times for SA suck. 3 or 5am.

Looks like all the 4 man bobsleigh will be between 3 and 5am so I'll catch the repeats maybe. At least some of the 2 man are between 2 and 4pm.

Lot of China hate here. But let's buy those iPhones people. ;)

Part of me agrees, it's always easier to prefer a sport with a clear cut, obvious winner not determined by judgement.

But Gymnastics is probably one of the most demanding activities you can do, it requires strength, stamina, agility, timing and finesse... Sure the determination of who wins is down to opinion but if gymnastics isn't a sport then nothing is...
