Bell Pottinger

Much like the direct marketing association (DMA) here in SA. What benefits will you lose if you get suspended?

If there are no benefits why join in the first place ?

Invoke client confidence. Like mentioned by the guy, whoever he is, above, they are likely to lose some clients who would prefer to deal with registered companies. But, those who liked their services are likely to stick with them and carry them through the next 5 years.

Sort of snob value/old boys club with standards that have to be outwardly adhered to.

Not being a member (unlike the medical profession) makes no difference to being allowed to practise.
Google Fuel PR which was also expelled but never suffered any loss of business.

Expulsion because of ethics failures would serve as a recommendation to baddies like the Mugabe pair, Omar al-Bashir and others.

Those firms who feel that they are getting value are not going to leave Bell Potty.

Excellent news.

So essentially they cannot operate for 5 years ?

There's no restriction on them operating in the industry, but many ethical companies would not consider using them, and regardless of others here downplaying the significance, it is most certainly going to impact their turnover, and who knows it could even lead to their collapse.

Lord Bell , one of their founders was on 702 in the evening today. He resigned and sold his shared last year.

He thinks they might go bust, and doesn't seem to care

BREAKING: Bell Pottinger expelled from PR body for Gupta work

Cape Town - Embattled British public relations firm Bell Pottinger has had its membership of the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) terminated.

In a press statement embargoed for 01:00 on Tuesday, September 5, the UK-based PRCA announced that Bell Pottinger would not be eligible to reapply for corporate membership of the PRCA for a minimum period of five years.

“Bell Pottinger has brought the PR and communications industry into disrepute with its actions, and it has received the harshest possible sanctions," PRCA director general Francis Ingham said in the statement.

Ingham said the PRCA had never before passed such a "damning indictment of an agency’s behaviour".

“This outcome reflects the huge importance that the PRCA places on the protection of ethical standards in the business of PR and communication,” he said.

So a slap on the wrist.

Agreed. They can start a campaign to try and undo the consequences of their actions, and to reconcile the warring factions.

But it is easier said than done.

I agree fully. Undo the f-ing damage you have done, or at least try to. The people most impacted by the catch-phrases you made up are also the least likely to have followed this case and seen your 'punishment'. An apology means nothing without at least attempting to put right what you did wrong.

So a slap on the wrist.

Except that all reputable PR firms are members. What this means and what industry insiders seem to believe is that this is the end of Bell Pottinger, at least in its current form. They're either going to go bust or they will have to completely re-brand themselves. Either way, it has destroyed their reputation and they have and will continue to lose business and rightfully so.

Saying that; they should be fined and essentially forced to re-pay the money they received for running their divisive campaign. They can plow it in to various social projects throughout South Africa, which is how the money should've been spent in the first place. Imagine if the heinous Guptas plowed 100,000 pounds in to various projects and programmes across SA every month?

Bell Pottinger’s second-largest shareholder has walked away from the business by writing off its investment and handing back the stake to the struggling PR firm.

Chime, co-owned by US investment firm Providence Equity Partners and Sir Martin Sorrell’s WPP group, has given up trying to sell its 27% holding after a scandal over a Bell Pottinger campaign in South Africa severely damaged the agency. On Monday, the British PR trade body expelled Bell Pottinger from its ranks after the firm orchestrated a campaign to stir up anger about “white monopoly capital” and “economic apartheid” for one of South Africa’s wealthiest and most controversial families.

“We no longer have a stake in Bell Pottinger,” confirmed a spokesman for Chime.

HSBC said on Tuesday it would no longer use Bell Pottinger following the South Africa furore. Britain’s biggest bank, which has weathered its own public relations disaster after its Swiss arm helped clients evade tax, is the fourth business to distance itself from the PR firm.

Ouch :D
