In the Namibian desert...
I recall that one or two of the members on this here of esteemed forum were from the place called Benoni,

It turns out, next week , I shall be leaving the quietness of my desert and heading to Benoni for a five night adventure.

Now, I have never been to Benoni and being the paranoid kind that I am have been doing a bit of research and have a few questions,

Is Benoni a safe place?

Are there area's to avoid?

Is it safe after dark?

How much does a beer cost?

Are the traffic cops bribeable?

Do they speak English in Benoni?

What currency do they use there?

What is there to do and see in Benoni?

Are the police reliable there?

How far from Benoni is Oom Fanie's house?

......Sigh , so many questions, such little time....

Benoni is just another city on the East Rand. It's safe and pretty much on par with any other city on the East Rand.

Just remember to bring your passport with ;)

Questions posed... Questions answered...

Is Benoni a safe place? As safe a place can be that allows GreGorGy through its gates.

Are there area's to avoid? Is this a trick question?

Is it safe after dark? Depends, do you plan to be the attacker, or the old lady?

How much does a beer cost? Geld pond 10.

Are the traffic cops bribeable? Are the Lions an awesome team? Don't ask stupid questions...

Do they speak English in Benoni? Only for the purposes of self defense.

What currency do they use there? Randelas

What is there to do and see in Benoni? Braai, and nothing.

Are the police reliable there? Depends on the size of your wallet, as above.

How far from Benoni is Oom Fanie's house? Closest edge is probably about 5km away, coming in via Great North rd.

Thanks for all the feedback folk, as a country bumpkin not use to the big city, it kinda reassures me to know that all you nutters are in the vicinity....

On the down side, the chances of me hitting a few cold ones with you are pretty slim, seeing as I am with a school group and driving.... I am not the coach, so I have yet to see the schedule of events..... but will stay in touch... On all my tours I have yet not managed not to have at least one braai/beer night......

Oh! What is the easiest route to Benoni, if I was coming from Vryburg?

No its not.

There they don't count sheep to sleep, they count gun shots

It's about 430km from Vryburg to Benoni, about 4.5 to 5 hours, mostly on the N14. But remember to allow for the time when you get (a) lost, (b) Hijacked or (c) arrested, when you refuse to bribe a traffic cop, or even worse, when you take the wrong turn and end up Soweto ..

Soweto is the safest during day, avoid Sandton and their destinations.
