Bentley Bentayga gets four-seat and seven-seat options

Luxury SUV now available with four or seven seats as maker looks to boost model’s practicality

The Bentley Bentayga is now available with four or seven seats, replacing the sole five-seat configuration sold previously.

The Crewe-based car maker says the addition of a seven-seat option reinforces the SUV's status as “the world’s most versatile luxury vehicle”.

V8 and Speed variants are available with both configurations, while the Bentayga Hybrid is available only with four seats, due to packaging limitations of its petrol-electric powertrain.

Updated 2020 Bentley Bentayga to feature revamped design

Premium SUV caught winter testing in new images, previewing styling tweaks to the front and rear

Bentley will update its best-selling model, the Bentayga SUV, next year to bring it into line with its latest models, and disguised prototypes have begun cold weather testing.

The test mule in these images is clearly recognisable as a Bentayga, but heavy camouflage to the front and rear suggests that Bentley is planning a number of design updates. At the rear, we can see that the brakelights have been reshaped and expanded, while the current model's deep numberplate recess looks to have been brought forward.

At the front, the Bentayga retains its prominent grille and three lower air intakes, but will receive a reconfigured headlight design to bring it into line with the firm's new Continental and Flying Spur - both of which were launched since the Bentayga arrived in 2016. We can also expect the front and rear bumpers to be redesigned.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

You’ll note that I started with a glowing assessment of the Bentayga Hybrid’s electric capability and then moved on to more moderate praise for the engine. If you too can look at this car from that perspective, you might consider buying one.

Frankel’s assessment that he’d pluck for the powerful, sonorous and altogether 'more Bentley' Bentayga V8 for the surcharge of just £6400 (less than 5% of the price) rings true for most buyers most of the time. But it would be a great pity if you wrote this car off as a cynical tax-dodger, created only to give access to swerve congestion charges (or city centre bans) and lower running bills for the wealthy.

Instead, consider that some do judge performance and presence differently to the majority. If I were driving relatively short distances every day, I’d relish the electric driving experience on offer here and feel good about burning less fuel than in a petrol equivalent.

So too it matters to some to make statements, and there’s a hard-to-ignore wow factor that comes with pulling up in such a big, brash car silently. And let’s not forget that, if they so choose, an owner of a car of this magnitude is likely to have garage space to show off many sides to their personality. If I were after a true performance car or performance four-seater, I may look elsewhere than a 2.5-tonne SUV anyway.

So, it may not be for everyone, but the Bentayga Hybrid has enough merits to make sense.

Cullinan, beware? Bentley hints ‘even bigger’ Bentayga variant is coming

The head of Bentley has dropped a heavy hint the British firm will take the fight to the Rolls-Royce Cullinan with an “even more luxurious, even bigger” version of the Bentayga.

According to CarAdvice, Bentley president and CEO Adrian Hallmark suggested the Bentayga range would expand with its upcoming facelift.

Bentayga not enough to save Bentley jobs

Big SUV no guarantee of company stability.

Bentley has surpassed an important milestone for its Bentayga SUV.

The British luxury vehicle brand announced that the 20 000th Bentayga has been delivered, which marks a notable achievement.

Although the Bentayga was considered deeply divisive of Bentley’s traditional values at launch, it has become a vital product in the company’s portfolio.

Product planners at Bentley realised that wealthy customers were not always domiciled in places with great tarmac driving roads. They desired the design, luxury cabin craftsmanship and technical features which have always defined Bentley, but with an ability to drive on all terrain types.

The solution has been Bentayga, which has conquered new customers for Bentley and added additional revenue, without sacrificing too many engineering resources. Although a tremendously heavy vehicle, even more so than Bentleys limousines, the Bentayga has adequate engineering applied, to ensure it drives as a Bentley is intended to.

Bentley Bentayga Imagined With Bacalar Front End

The Bentley Bentayga has been a sales success over the past four years with Bentley selling 13.7 Bentayga’s every day. If you had any doubt that ultra-luxury SUVs weren’t selling it’s time to face the facts.

The SUV from Crewe is due for a facelift and although we are expecting to see some minor cosmetic changes to the refreshed model we wish it would look more like this.

New renderings from artist Kleber Silva show what it’d look like if Bentley asked Mulliner to give the SUV its mid-cycle refresh by applying the stunning front end of the Bentley Bacalar onto the four-door luxury family vehicle.

At the front, the Bentayga retains its prominent grille but receives a reconfigured headlight design to match the firm's new Continental and Flying Spur - both of which were launched since the Bentayga arrived in 2016 - and a reshaped bumper with new, straight-edged lower air intakes topped with the same mesh design as the grille.

The rear end design has not been leaked, but previously spotted test mules showed that the brakelights have been reshaped and expanded, while the current model's deep numberplate recess looks to have been brought forward.

Bentley will officially unveil an updated version of its best-selling model, the Bentayga SUV, on Tuesday 30 June.

The reveal date confirmation follows a set of leaked images posted online last week, which have given us an idea of what to expect from the overhaul.

Bentley Bentayga

Bentley has announced details of the new Bentayga - the definitive luxury SUV, and the first car launched under Bentley's Beyond100 business plan. With more than 20,000 Bentaygas handcrafted since the car's launch - more than any of its competitors - the new Bentley Bentayga is set to build on an incredible success story to date.

A new exterior design adopts the Bentley design DNA now prevalent across the entire model range, giving Bentley the freshest and most modern product family of any luxury car company. Introducing the very latest onboard technology and an even more cosseting cabin, the new model is significantly revised both inside and out.

Combining the abilities of a performance grand tourer, a luxury limousine, a spacious family car and an off-roader, the new Bentayga follows its predecessor's mantle of having the broadest brief of any car on sale today.

The car that established the luxury SUV sector has been enhanced to create the ultimate in power, luxury and usability. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Crewe, England, the extraordinary new Bentley Bentayga builds further on the outstanding success of its predecessor.

Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, comments: "From its moment of launch nearly five years ago, the Bentayga has been the very definition of the luxury SUV. Like the Continental GT, the Bentayga created an entirely new part of the market, and since we set the benchmark many others have joined the sector, but no other car can offer a breadth of ability to rival the Bentley Bentayga. With the new Bentayga, we're repositioning the pinnacle of the luxury SUV segment to be even higher, even further away from the competition. We've listened to our customers and made improvements to the areas most important to them, and the new Bentayga is a thoroughly modern and beautiful extension of the original car's abilities and achievements."

Refreshed Bentley Bentayga revealed with ‘significant’ styling overhaul

Bentley has whipped the covers off its “significantly revised” Bentayga, handing the facelifted luxury SUV fresh exterior styling and “even more cosseting” cabin.

From what we can tell, all engines carry over unchanged, so the line-up will again include the company’s 404 kW turbocharged 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine, along with a 320 kW turbodiesel V8, a plug-in hybrid powertrain and the turbocharged 6,0-litre W12 engine (a flagship Speed model is again on the cards).

So, what’s new? Well, the Bentayga’s updated look brings it neatly in line with its siblings, the third-generation Continental GT and the new Flying Spur. Indeed, the Crewe-based firm says “every panel” at the front of the car has been redesigned.

The grille is both larger and more upright than before, while new LED matrix headlamps have been adopted and sited higher than before. There’s also a “more aggressive” front bumper, while heated “wet-arm” windscreen wipers (with 22 washer jets in each arm) have been introduced.

At the rear, Bentley says the SUV has also “undergone a major transformation”, with a “total redesign” of its rump (complete with a 20 mm increase to the rear track width), including a new full-width tailgate incorporating new taillamps. The licence plate, meanwhile, has been moved down into the bumper, while the wheel design is fresh, too.

First drive: 2020 Bentley Bentayga prototype

Updated luxury SUV returns to a rapidly growing class. We drive a disguised test mule ahead of customer deliveries later this year

Customer deliveries will start in the third quarter of the year, and although pricing hasn’t been released yet, we’re not expecting a significant hike over the outgoing V8. The Bentayga was the first car to arrive in its segment and it enjoyed several years without significant competition, but the arrival of the Cullinan, Urus and – more obviously – soon-to-be-launched Aston Martin DBX have made life far tougher. None of is changes are radical, but all should help sharpen the Bentayga’s case.

The new Bentley Bentayga offers an Akrapovic exhaust

There is a new Bentley Bentayga. It has arrived with much talk of comfort, peace and quiet. Especially in four-seat form. Peace and quiet that’ll be blown to smithereens with its optional Akrapovic exhaust system. If you’re buying your SUV with emphasis on the S, this may be a box you want to tick.

It’s made of titanium and boasts twin oval tailpipes engraved with the Akrapovic and Bentley names. But it’s what goes on when you follow the path they take beneath the car that’s interesting.

“The central silencer is replaced with straight pipes,” says Bentley, “which channel the exhaust gases into the customer rear muffler where they are swirled through internal baffles to create a more characterful voice.”
