Bentley Bentayga

Man, no one this side of Bugatti and Pagani do interiors better. If I ever win a "MASSIVE" lottery I'm buying a Mulsanne. Reckon behind one's wheel must be one of the nicest places to be.

Except maybe between Yvonne Strahovski's thighs. But that's a different thread...

THIS BENTLEY BENTAYGA MAKES A HEALTHY 516 KW

As things stand, the Bentley Bentayga is the most powerful production SUV in the world, thanks to the range-topping model’s 6,0-litre W12. But German tuner DMC has liberated even more oomph from the hefty powerplant, lending the mansion-on-wheels a fresh personality in the process.

Officially, DMC calls its creation the “Gigante”, and it has fitted it with a bonnet, side skirts and spoiler fashioned from carbon-fibre. New forged aluminium wheels (available in sizes from 22- to 24 inches) have also been added.

The interior likewise features a handful of revisions. The steering wheel, for instance, receives a custom carbon-fibre finish with leather detailing, while the footwells gain a set of hand-stitched floor mats.

The massive 12-cylinder engine also benefits from a new exhaust system and new engine management software to give it a total power output of 516 kW and 1 055 N.m of torque. This increases the Bentayga’s top speed by 11 km/h to 312 km/h.

DMC has not revealed how much this tune-up package will cost you…

ULTIMATE LUXURY SUV? MEET THE BENTAYGA MULLINER…

Bentley Motors has announced a new flagship model, the Bentayga Mulliner, describing it as “the ultimate luxury SUV”.

The exterior of the new Bentayga Mulliner features 22-inch, seven-spoke wheels with floating centres, as well as dual-tone paintwork. The Crewe-based manufacturer says the latter will be made available as an option across the Bentayga range from April.

With luxury the main order of business, the interior of the Bentayga Mulliner sports a colour split, with the front and rear seats finished in different hide colours.

Ombré Burr Walnut Veneer is extensively used in the cabin, including on a special veneered panel that replaces the standard central console facia.

An interesting option is the bespoke solid gold (in either yellow, white or rose gold) mechanical Breitling clock that can be decorated with eight diamond indexes and features as many as 196 individual pieces.

The rear cabin comes with bespoke Cumbia crystal flutes, an illuminated chilling cabinet and a bottle cooler. If the optional Liney Hamper by Mulliner is selected, the Bentayga furthermore gains a refrigerator, fine china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass as well as a storage area for dry goods.

The audio system in this Bentley is the most powerful in its class, boasting 1950 watts driven though twenty speakers via a 21-channel amplifier.

With the “My Mood” option, owners can illuminate the interior in 15 different “moods”, while also adjusting the brightness of the lights in the doors, armrests and foot wells. This is teamed with LED welcome lamps situated on the Mulliner’s tread-plates.

Performance wise, the Bentayga Mulliner is powered by the standard 6,0-litre W12 engine that produces 447 kW and 900 Nm. Bentley claims a 0-100 km/h time of 4,1 seconds and a top speed of 301 km/h.

The first example of the Bentayga Mulliner will be on display at the Bentley stand in Geneva next week.

7 most expensive SUVs on SA’s new vehicle market

Do you have a few million burning a hole in your pocket (and crave a super-posh SUV)? No, us neither…

But that hasn’t stopped us from digging through the official price lists and identifying the seven most expensive SUVs currently on South Africa’s new vehicle market. Predictably, they all feature all-wheel drive and automatic transmissions.

Bear in mind, of course, that the rand figures quoted below are base prices, and that every single of one of seven models featured here can be fitted with all manner of expensive optional extras, should your pockets stretch even deeper…

1. Bentley Bentayga W12: R3 987 000

Bentley Bentayga The biggest price on the list and the biggest engine, too. The Bentayga employs a 6,0-litre, 12-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, sending 447 kW and 900 N.m to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission (resulting in a 0-100 km/h time of just 4,1 seconds and top speed of more than 300 km/h). If you can’t quite stretch to R4-million, the diesel model should be here by the middle of 2017, and it’ll be slightly cheaper…

2. Range Rover L Supercharged SVAutobiography: R3 688 128

Range Rover L Supercharged SVAutobiography The long-wheelbase SVAutobiography uses a 5,0-litre V8 that has been supercharged to the tune of 405 kW and 680 N.m. The result? A sprint from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,5 seconds. Not bad for a luxury tank weighing in at well over two tonnes, is it?

3. Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 463: R2 482 028

Mercedes-AMG G63 Edition 463 The first of three Mercedes-AMG models on this list employs a 5,5-litre, turbocharged V8 worth some 420 kW and 760 N.m, which translates to a 5,4-second sprint to three figures. And, of course, the G63 is more than just a little useful off the beaten track…

4. Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: R2 481 000

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S You were waiting for a Cayenne, weren’t you? Well, the Turbo S won’t disappoint, boasting a 0-100 km/h time of just 4,1 seconds thanks the 419 kW/800 N.m 4,8-litre turbocharged V8 lurking under its bonnet…

5. Mercedes-AMG GLS63: R2 378 352

Mercedes-AMG GLS63 If the G63 above is a little too retro for your tastes, you have another option from the folks over at Affalterbach. Billed as the S-Class of SUVs, the GLS looks (and feels) rather more modern than its sibling. The GLS63 derivative uses (you guessed it) a 5,5-litre, turbocharged V8 churning out 430 kW and 760 N.m. The obligatory sprint figure? Some 4,6 seconds…

6. Range Rover Sport SVR: R2 212 286

Range Rover Sport SVR The flagship of the local Range Rover Sport line-up, the SVR-badged variant uses the same supercharged powerplant as the SVAutobiography above, which means it boasts 405 kW and 680 N.m. But, since it’s lighter (and far more dynamically gifted), the SVR completes the dash to 100 km/h in 4,7 seconds (eight-tenths faster than its larger sibling).

7. Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupé: R2 170 312

Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupé Borrowing its heart from the GLS above, the GLE63 S Coupé (as well as the standard, non-coupé model, which is slightly cheaper) sees off the 0-100 km/h test in just 4,2 seconds, some four-tenths quicker than its the GLS.

Got cash? Here are SA’s five most expensive SUVs

Month after month South Africans’ love affair with luxury SUVs continue to soar.

Though these behemoths do not sell in the same numbers as passenger cars or double cab bakkies, they are still an integral part of the new vehicle market.

Only the best

It should come as no surprise that manufacturers bring their very best SUVs to our market. South Africa, then, has no shortage when it comes to choosing an SUV from the upper echelons of the segment.

Bentley launched its first-ever SUV, the Bentyaga, in SA in 2016; and with a starting price of R4-million nonetheless! One would think that this is way above the pay-grade of what is considered feasible and logical, yet the British company manages to sell an average of five Bentaygas locally every month!

And remember, that's R4-million before any optional extras have been added to the price.

For now the Bentayga is the most expensive SUV in SA, but with Lamborghini also developing an SUV, the Urus, it’ll be interesting to see where and how that SUV will be positioned amongst our list of expensive SUVs.

Here is our list of the five most expensive SUVs in SA:

1 Bentley Bentayga: R4-million

The Bentayga can be called nothing but SUV nirvana. It encapsulates everything Bentley stands for - the luxury, the class, the finess - and it embodies everything in an SUV. It was perhaps not as surprising when Bentley started developing its Bentayga, because the world wants SUVs and the people need Bentleys. It was a win-win situation in any case.

2 Range Rover L SV Autobiography: R3.5-million

The 'Big Daddy' in the Land Rover garage, the Range Rover is the ultimate definition of off-road luxury. Despite being festooned in luxury and crystal, the SV Autobiography didn’t lose any of the credentials that gave it its reputable and unshakeable reputation. This is the epitome of all SUVs. Period.

3 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S: R2.5-million

The second-generation Cayenne has proven to be a hit for Porsche SA, but the Turbo S is the 911 of the range. Not only that, it is perhaps the 911 of all SUVs. With pure athleticism and bold looks to match, the Turbo S is the Wayde van Niekerk of all SA’s SUVs. Sure, there are more powerful SUVs on the market, but none possess Porsche DNA.

4 Mercedes-AMG G 63: R2.3-million

Though based on somewhat dated architecture, the G-Wagon is perhaps Mercedes-Benz’s most proven SUV. Though it may lack the more refined interiors and execution of the GLS, the G is far from apologetic for what it is. It has that go anywhere attitude and will make little work in conquering rough terrain.

5 BMW X6 M: R1.97-million

The X6 M may divide opinion regarding it looks, but this SUV personifies being butch. It’s fast and possesses dynamic traits that can give many sports cars a go for their money. It may not be the most practical BMW, but it is definitely one of the most unique one’s ever made.

Bentley trials on-demand car loan service for owners

Bentley owners will be able to summon and then drive a Bentley for free, with a view to rolling the scheme out on a wider scale

‘Bentley on Demand’ is being trialled as a car loan service to Bentley owners in Dallas, Los Angeles and New York.

The app-based service allows existing Bentley owners to summon their choice of Bentley to their location. This is similar in some ways to ride-hailing app giant Uber, but a driver is not provided. The service is free of charge for the Bentley owners to use.

The cars can be loaned for up to five days, and Bentley is flexible as to how many can be loaned at a time depending on the driver's eligibility and fleet availability.

This follows Bentley’s trial with Filld, which allowed owners to summon a fuel delivery, rather than having to stop at a filling station.

The service is accessible through Bentley’s Network app, where interested Bentley owners can validate their account and choose their on-demand car. A reminder is sent an hour before delivery, then another message when the delivery is made. Loan cars are kept in a Bentley customer experience fleet managed by the brand, and the pool of cars is expected to grow as demand does.

Bentley is trailing the service in the US through the summer months; no definite timescale has been given. There are no current plans to extend the service to the UK, although a Bentley spokesman said that the brand is looking to expand its luxury mobility services where possible.

Bentley Bentayga plug-in hybrid due in 2018 with zero-emission capability

Electrified version of luxury SUV will introduce third powertrain to the range, offering a full EV mode

Bentley will launch a plug-in hybrid version of its Bentayga next year, using a supercharged 3.0-litre petrol V6 mated to an electric motor.

The system, related to the one used in the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid, is predicted to have a total output of more than 410bhp and feature a full-electric mode for zero-emission running.

Spotted testing on the continent, the plug-in Bentagya will feature no aesthetic changes to its pure-combustion-engined siblings, the twin-turbo V8 diesel and W12 petrol models, barring the addition of a plug port to charge its lithium-ion battery.

It’s due to make production next year, after the launch of the upcoming second-generation Continental GT. The plug-in drivetrain will broaden the appeal of the Bentayga - which has already enjoyed strong sales success with orders reaching their annual limit in the first year of production – particularly in markets where strict emissions limits are enforced.

Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer confirmed to Autocar earlier this year that all of the brand’s models would gain PHEV variants to address these scenarios. The company has also expressed interest in producing a fully-electric model, as previewed by the EXP12 Speed 6e concept of the Geneva motor show.

How much the Bentley Bentayga Diesel costs in SA...

Late in 2016, we headed to Spain to sample the new Bentley Bentayga Diesel. And now South African pricing has finally been confirmed.

CARmag.co.za can reveal that the first oil-burner ever offered by the Crewe-based automaker will be priced in South Africa from R2 950 000. That, according to our maths, makes its some R1 037 000 cheaper than the W12-powered model.

The Bentayga Diesel is powered by a 4,0-litre V8 worth 320 kW and 900 N.m (with that peak torque figure matching the 447 kW W12 variant), mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic. The claimed sprint from standstill to 100 km/h takes 4,8 seconds, with the top speed pegged at 270 km/h. The British automaker claims a combined fuel consumption of 7,9 L/100 km.

Shared with the Audi SQ7 (itself still not offered locally), the 32-valve eight-pot features a pair of twin-scroll turbochargers as well as an electric supercharger. The latter draws power from a 48-volt system (rather than being driven by the engine), working in the first third of the power curve to provide boost at low engine speeds, before the turbos pick up the slack as the revs climb.

From the outside, the oil-burning derivative looks just like the full-fat W12, bar the addition of a gloss black grille, distinctive “twin-quad” tailpipes and subtle “V8 Diesel” badging on the front doors.

KAHN DESIGN GIVES BENTAYGA THE ‘LE MANS’ TREATMENT

Kahn Design has turned its attention to the Bentley Bentayga Diesel, giving the luxury SUV rather a menacing makeover, dubbing it the Le Mans Edition.

The Bradford-based firm has handed the two-tonne oil-burner fresh body panels and a custom interior.

Painted in Volcanic Rock Satin, the Bentley Bentayga Le Mans features a full aero kit, which includes a special front bumper spoiler and rear wing. The front grille, door handle surrounds, exhaust system and roof rails, meanwhile, are finished in shadow satin.

This look is rounded off by a set of 23-inch Le Mans alloy wheels and a lowered stance thanks to a suitably manipulated air suspension system.

The most notable change inside is the re-upholstered 3D Herringbone black perforated leather seats, while you’ll also easily spot the Kahn leather steering wheel and high-gloss door panels.

The 4,0-litre V8 oil-burner powering the big Bentley, however, has not been touched, which means it still pushes out 320 kW and 900 N.m of torque.
