Bentley Motors has unveiled the Bentley Mulliner Batur - a new two-door grand touring coupé limited to 18 series pieces that embodies the start of a design revolution at Bentley.

Created by Director of Design Andreas Mindt and his team, the Batur is a showcase of a new design DNA that will ultimately guide the design of Bentley's future range of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs).

The collection of just 18 series examples of the Batur is the latest project by Bentley's in-house bespoke and coachbuilding division, Mulliner, and succeeds the Bacalar - a run of 12 individually specified, designed and handcrafted Barchettas that relaunched coachbuilding at Bentley. Like its predecessor - the Bacalar - the Batur is named after a beautiful natural body of water. Lake Batur is an 88m deep, 16 km2 crater lake in Kintamani on the island of Bali, Indonesia, and provides nutrient-rich water to both local hot springs and agriculture.

The Batur will also be the most powerful Bentley yet, with a 740+ PS version of the iconic, hand-assembled 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine that has metaphorically and literally powered Bentley's success for the last two decades. As the engine enters its twilight years as part of Bentley's Beyond100 transformation journey to being fully electrified, the Batur forms the first part of a celebration of the W12's extraordinary power, torque and refinement. Engine performance will be matched to the most advanced Bentley chassis ever, with Speed-tuned air suspension, electric active anti-roll control, eLSD, four-wheel steering and torque vectoring.

The Bentley Batur Is a $2 Million Coupe With 3D-Printed Gold Accents

The Batur will be limited to just 18 examples, and you can't even buy one, even if you're Oprah-rich.

Special edition Bentleys usually don’t deal in half-measures. They either have huge power or crazy luxury or zany styling. The forthcoming Bentley Batur — named for an Indonesian mountain and crater lake — has all three. It’ll also be limited to just 18 examples and cost a staggering $1,995,097 before taxes or options.

But wait, the ridiculous figures don’t stop there. While the new body will be a preview of battery-electric Bentleys to come, the Batur will be proudly powered by petrol. Its retuned W12 engine will produce 737.56 pound-feet of torque, which isn’t quite full-size diesel truck territory, but friends, it’s not far off. It also makes 729 horsepower, which is pretty good, but in a world where a 797-horsepower Dodge starts at less than $80,000, it’s kind of not worth talking about. It’s also not the point.

Options on the Batur include natural fiber composite (Porsche is doing this on some of its race-car body parts, and we love it), lightweight titanium, and 3D-printed 18-karat gold touches. The idea of lightweight parts on a Bentley GT car is kinda funny since Bentley GTs usually weigh as much as two-and-a-half of Public Enemy’s uzis at the minimum, but I digress.

File under 'British Eccentricity'. Bentley has decided to show the main features of its new design language for the electric era… on a 12-cylinder petrol burner that's the most powerful road car it has ever built.

The Batur is another collectors' Bentley, a sequel to the sold-out Bacalar roadster. But looks very different, and not just because it's a coupe. Only 18 of them will be made, and Bentley has already shown the design in secret to some of its best customers. Chalk it up as a success: it sold out many weeks before the public unveiling at the Monterey Car Week.

At a price of £1.65 million each. That's plus VAT or the local equivalent, but I guess these are the sort of collectors who go by Leona Helmsley's motto 'only the little people pay taxes' (said shortly before she was imprisoned for tax evasion). Whatever their tax arrangements, they have taste, eh?

The Batur is a thorough but surprisingly subtle re-body of the Continental Speed. And wonderful though the Speed is, I guess an extra dollop of horsepower and handling dynamism can do no harm. So the W12 engine is titivated up to 740bhp and 737lb ft of torque – a nice round 1000Nm if you speak metric.

Bentley has launched a new, ultra-low-volume Mulliner coupé, the Batur, which previews how its future electric models will look.

The launch of the limited-run car also signals the end of production for the ubiquitous 6.0-litre Crewe-built W12 engine that has powered its cars for 20 years.

The Batur, revealed this week in front of a 500-strong contingent of Bentley owners as part of Monterey Car Week, has been designed over the past year and will reach its first customer in mid-2023.

It is a two-door fixed-head coupé based on the underpinnings of the latest, longer-wheelbase Bentley Continental GT launched in 2018 and is powered by the punchiest W12 ever, still under development but claimed to make at least 730bhp and 740lb ft of torque. This will make it Bentley’s most potent road car yet.

To go with its mighty engine, the Batur offers Bentley’s most advanced chassis available, as well as Bentley Continental GT Speed-level tuned three-chamber air suspension, 48V electric active anti-roll control, an electronic limited-slip differential (with torque vectoring) and unique 22in wheels with rear steering.

The Batur will be hand-built in Crewe by Mulliner, Bentley’s specialist coachbuilding arm. The car will closely follow the path of its predecessor, the barchetta-bodied Bentley Bacalar, which was revealed last year as a concept but subsequently productionised for a batch of 12 cars that sold out instantly.

Bentley chose the prestigious Monterey Car Week to reveal this special model known as the Mulliner Batur and not only is it their most powerful car ever made but it also gives us a preview of their future design language for the all-electric age.

So what stands out for this new design language? Firstly, the split rounded headlights have been replaced with sleek triple-beam light fixtures with LED accents that jut out toward the front fenders. Then there is a new grille design with aggressive bumper detailing below it, some very tasty 22-inch wheels and around the rear, you will find taillights that are even slimmer than before.

As the title suggests, the Mulliner Batur packs some serious grunt. In this application, the twin-turbo 6.0-litre W12 engine has been tweaked to deliver “more than 730 hp” (544 kW) and 1,000 Nm (738 lb-ft) of torque. This makes it the most powerful car the company has ever built, and it rides atop an advanced air suspension that adds electric active anti-roll, an electronic limited-slip differential, and four-wheel steering.

Bentley has got a mighty task on its hands, the loyal customers expect a powerful performance car with unmatched levels of comfort. Those customers are not too keen on design changes, if you look at Bentleys over the last two decades you can see that clearly. With the whole automotive world moving away from combustion engines even Bentley has to prepare for the shift.

Powered by the latest iteration of the W12 engine, which was actually introduced by VW in the concept car called W12 back in 1997. The engine then found its way to Audi A8, VW Touareg and the maddest Passat ever made by the company. Famous Spyker C12 was using the engine as well and of course it is a staple motor for the Bentley.

Bentley Mulliner Batur ushers in a dynamic new look for the British marque

Love them or loathe them, it appears that future Bentleys will no longer have the large round headlights that characterise today’s models.

The Bentley Mulliner Batur, an exclusive new creation of the brand’s bespoke division, was unveiled at the Monterey Car Week over the weekend. It also marks the beginning of a new design chapter for the Crewe-based company, which will coincide with the release of its battery-powered range from 2025 onwards.

The Batur’s form is cleaner and simplified, says Bentley, with a lower and more upright grille and new teardrop-shaped headlights matched by similarly shaped taillights at the back.
