Get a secondhand Defender. They are noisy and ugly, but boy do they shine in the rough. If you only want to use it for 4x4, put it on a trailer and tow it to your destination.

I dont see why you would take a Defender.. If your talking second hand now...
Rather get a second hand discovery 2, has exactly the same chassis as the Defender, performs just as good off-road... Its just more luxurious inside... Its nice to be able to have the aircon on when you're driving in the African heat...

u can buy them but they like hens teeth, try Autotrader have seen a few there in the past.

For actual 4x4 - has to be the Defender. Toyota Land Cruiser for anything else.
I have a friend with two luxury games farms near Kruger. They have a fleet of about 20 Toyota's (Hilux's and Land Cruiser's) they use to run their land with.
When it comes to tourists though they almost insist on seeing and riding around in Defenders. So they have 4 game viewing vehicles that are Defenders. The Defender is the image of Africa.
