I have to get a new adsl router...

Which of the following three would you recommend?

* The Netgear Super-G Wireless Router
(http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=59847)

* The Linksys WAG200G
(http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=91031)

* The Linksys WRT54GS
(http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=100224)

Or any other?

What is your opinion about going for 802.11n compatibility?

And what's up with the ADSL2 standard? Worthwhile to go for that while I am in the process of upgrading? As far I as understand ADSL2 will be rolled out by Telkom in the next few months (to be usd with their pay-tv product)...

Any advice would be much appreciated... :)

ADSL2 will only affect modems, not routers.

One of the benefits of the Linksys WRT54 series is that you can use 3rd party firmware and add very advanced features. I use my Linksys WRT54GS to split traffic between 3 accounts, International, Local-IS, and Local-SAIX. And because I can do it at router level, the splitting works seemlessly accross my network.

If you opt for the Linksys, just be careful of the version you buy. V4 or lower is best. Otherwise, your best bet is the WRT54GL, which is especially produced for it's advanced Linux capabilities (hence the L).

I have no experience of the Netgear.

I would recommend the Billion 7300G. I use them for all my clients and have never had any issues with them :D

Free....

I personaly would say the free one is the best however, a better question might be what would you like to do other than connect via adsl to the net?

I have a D-Link DSL 2640U wireless router, it's working well and has a good wireless range. No complaints about the router but D-Link South Africa personnel are not the best, you probably won't like them if you ask them for support, but the router is good.

My 2c worth ...

The Netgear DG834GT is based on the Broadcom 6348 Mips processor which is rated at 255 bogoMips which is probably the fastest processor of the three routers that you listed and should offer some speed advantages on processor intensive tasks like torrents etc. It has 4Meg of flash ROM and 16Meg of RAM. The Broadcom chipset also works very well on noisy lines i.e. fewer dropouts and faster stable speeds (something to consider if you have a 4Mbits/s line). This chipset also has the best ADSL diagnostic software available (see http://dmt.mhilfe.de/) which allows you to test your line and to vary certain parameters in the modem like the Tx power to increase your connection speed etc. This is a very popular router in the hacker community and you can download 'improved' fimware like UberGT which offers additional features etc. Digital Planet has a Netgear promotion at the moment where you can get a R100 voucher if you buy a Netgear product.

I'm not sure whether or not the DG834GT supports half bridge mode though - you had better check carefully if you require this feature. If you need this option then a Billion 7300G might be a better choice. This is also a very reliable router.

I've got a DLink DSL-2640U. It averages around 75-90 concurrent connections. With only 14Mb Mem (I think, telnet > showinfo) the NAT table slow the router down alot. Therefore, I'd like to swop this out with something with more Memory and alot more MIPS right? Any suggestions advice? I'm looking at the Cisco 877 with 128Mb.

I agree with Lunchbox, I also have a Billion 7300G and don't have any problems with it whatsoever :)

Have a netgear DG834GT myself & have sold and installed around 10, highly reccomend them.

The Linksys WRT54GS is solid.

Just remember with this one, you will still need a separate ADSL modem.

Hehehe, each guy is giving you a different opinion here, good luck picking mate.

I believe most of them mentioned are good, and wont give you problems.

Quick question for router boffs.

Is it possible to split the ADSL line and hook up 2 routers. I want it to work like this: If one router is connect and you use the other router via bridge mode to dial in, the 1st router will be disconnected. If the first router tries to connect it should disconnect the second router etc.

Any way to do that?

DLINK :P

not fanboi of billion any more seems to be just another marconi in disguise ;)

though netgear also decent i hear
