Best affordable eReader

I'd def go for a kindle.

...because the daily book specials pricing will outweigh cost of the hardware.

Why do you need a non-kindle device? What about a Kobo etc.
Do you have a link with local Kobo buying options?
Takealot, which is referenced on their website as a place to buy, only have a Kobo cover?

Doing a second necro of this thread to point out:

I actually contacted both takealot and kobo this year and both responded with basically "tough luck", making the only viable supplier that won't extort you on pricing amazon.

There was a libra 2 on takealot recently that they supplier claimed has a market price of R8k..... shortly after going down bit by bit down to to to R4k it dissappeared so I think he was doing something scaly.

Yeah, I've been struggling with both Kobo and Takealot to sort out why Kobo ereaders aren't available any longer. Takealot seem to be unaware that they are the official resellers of Kobo devices in South Africa. Kobo don't seem to care, I even emailed their CEO and pretty much got a shrug.

Amazon is your best bet. Even with import fees the Kobo lands for cheaper than a Kindle Paperwhite.
