I may sound all bitter and twisted, but I honestly have a major problem with a kid just being handed everything on a plate.

If they have big bucks to blow then buy her a 20 year old Merc Automatic and let her blow the bucks on petrol.

Sorry I taught far too many little princesses who came to school in Beemers and such and had absolutely no respect for money or their folks who did the spending

Faz, I need to buy you a drink. Woooosah. :p ;)

Oh, and to the others (mainly Sensorai :D ): If you read the OP, he was asking advice in order to advise a friend. Preaching to the messenger isn't going to help. ;)

Its SensorEi :) Ya its not the first time I've noticed your cocky unnecessary remarks lol. That is my advice to tell his friend. Don't spoil the girl or she'll be a brat her whole life. That is what he should tell his mate IMO.

Fazda, I'm with you on this one.
Fortunately not all parents are like that.

Anyone seen the movie The Ultimate gift? Good story.

Approaching this from another angle @ the OP. Has your friend considered the increased hijack risk associated with more expensive cars? Modern safety features don't help if you're dead next to the car with a bullet in your chest.

Weeeeeeeeeell, though I agree with everyone here stating that a first car should preferably be a second-hand el-cheapo or a hand-me-down, I have to make a recommendation based on the OP. My recommendation, as already mentioned, would be the Honda Jazz Auto. I drove one as a courtesy car while my Civic was at the dealer and it really is a fun, cheeky little car with enough power for an 18 y/o. Anything more would just endanger the child. Add in the fact that Honda has a proven track-record for reliability and you've got a winner on your hands. I have some friends driving the top-of-the-range Jazz Auto (with panoramic windscreen and all) and they would also vouch for this. Incredible little car.

If the spoiling dad would be able to up his price range by R20k he could consider the Civic 5-dr VXi Auto, which is what I drive. Smooth auto-box and every comfort feature you could think of. Safe as houses as well.

I think the levels of spoiled have changed... a R500k is spoilt, under R500k is average... R240k is par.

Bull**** man. The vast majority of students don't even have cars. It's not like every student is driving around in a new Golf 6, come on....

Guys ... what is all the raving about?

I understand your right to an opinion ... but all I was asking was advice on a decent automatic in a certain price range so that it is easy to make a choice.

To all the posters who say that it is too much ... bullsh%t. Kindly reserve your opinion for when you have to buy your kid a car.

I have recommended the BMW 120d and the Mercedes A-Class to him.

Thanks guys.

Even so that's too much, the little princess should be learning to drive in a second hand Beetle as far as I'm concerned...sheesh...you guys have lost all concept of money...

I might sound like a bitter old *******, but there is a question of instilling values here. If the kid needs an automatic (which is really an excuse because she's probably too lasy to learn to drive a manual, unless she is crippled) then there are plenty of old autos on the market to look at.

Once again I repeat, to be spending telephone numbers on an 18 year old's wheels is plain bloody stupidity!

Dude! The request was for car advice - not parenting advice... butt out!
Some people have money - they can spend it as they see fit it has NOTHING to do with anyone else. How do you know that 'princess' has not worked hard toward something and that choosing a motor car is her reward?

There are many ways to instill values and that is far outside the scope of this thread.

Besides: you are going to give yourself a freakin hernia thinking about this - just chill!

I may sound all bitter and twisted, but I honestly have a major problem with a kid just being handed everything on a plate.

See, now that would really be a waste of money not to mention ecologically corrupt... can you see how distorted your judgment is on this subject?

You do sound incredibly bitter and twisted BTW.

I may sound bitter and twisted, but that comes after years of watching parents spoil their kids rotten and then wonder why they get kicked in the teeth when they are older.

You asked for advice and you got it buddy...if you don't like my advice just ignore it...and FTR, I think you are bloody crazy suggesting a BMW for an 18 year old...don't come crying here after she has either been hijacked or wrapped it around a tree somewhere.

If you cannot cope with a varity of opinions when you ask for advice, don't ask the question in the first place.
