Not every student, but theres alot, i know 3 guys at Tuks with golf 6 Gtis... and the cars only out for about 2 months.

And 5000 students at Tuks who catch a bus or taxi to varsity every day.

Don't forget the ones WALKING to campus or driving hand-me-downs on the verge of breaking apart.

...oh, the sweet, sweet memories of driving my junker for 4.5 years! :D

Dude! The request was for car advice - not parenting advice... butt out!
Some people have money - they can spend it as they see fit it has NOTHING to do with anyone else. How do you know that 'princess' has not worked hard toward something and that choosing a motor car is her reward?

There are many ways to instill values and that is far outside the scope of this thread.

Besides: you are going to give yourself a freakin hernia thinking about this - just chill!

See, now that would really be a waste of money not to mention ecologically corrupt... can you see how distorted your judgment is on this subject?

You do sound incredibly bitter and twisted BTW.

Love it when people ask for advice then get pissed off when you give it to them....

The request was for advice about a motor car you hopped on your soapbox about parenting, evidently from your point of view as a teacher - do you even have any kids of your own?:rolleyes:

(I feel a "then STFU" followed shortly by another infraction coming on..)

There is an old quote, related to debate which suggests that one keeps one's eye on the ball and not the man.

Advice was asked for, and advice was given from all quarters. If you want to now turn this into a personal attack on me, I suggest you take a step back right now. It is totally uncalled for, and if that counts as a STFU then so be it.

Where is this old quote? I'd guess it was more a saying than a quote if anything... regardless: you are talking about 'Ad-hominem' - attacking the character of an individual instead of debating your point.

Where here has your character been attacked?

I simply stated an observation as to the fact that you have not given the advice that was asked for, you have however given unsolicited advice on the (rather touchy) subject of parenting (incidentally attacking the character of the individual in question and that of their offspring in the process.)

I then went on to question your credentials in terms of your vitriolic assertions on the subject of parenting - a question you have not yet answered.

You may feel personally attacked... I can understand that because that is generally what it feels like when you know you're wrong and refuse to admit it to yourself.

BTW: I was referring to me saying "then STFU" once you admit that you are not, in fact a parent and have (in fact) been blowing hot air ...and me getting another infraction in the process, not you.

18 yr olds typically don't have the experience to handle the power produced by R250k cars. Your buddy would have to be downright retarded to even consider it. Apart from just her safety, it may very well affect other road users.

Agreed with BCO, Honda Jazz 1.4 auto.

Slinky Mike, will you please just back off now before you make a total ass of yourself.

You decided to get personal with my remarks and accuse me of blowing hot air and not having kids...I presume because you somehow figure that teachers don't have kids and they dish out crap advice.

Enough!

My original advice stands. You must be crazy to spend that amount of money on a first car for an 18 year old. There are plenty of suitable cars out there that would cost a great deal less...unless you are trying to buy yourself into your daughter's good books, all she needs is a reliable set of wheels that are going to be used to transport her to Varsity and back for the next few years.

Why one would be stupid enough to spend a quarter of a million Rand on something like that, I simply wouldn't know.

End of story.

Guys, I am with Slinky on this one.

I appreciate your advice on parenting ... but that is not the advice I asked for. My buddy is loaded and if he can easily afford to spend a certain amount of money on a vehicle... who are you to say that he should not?

His daughter is an absolute angel and is quite possibly the most responsible kid I know. I guess this stems from the wonderful parents that she has. Mom is a CA with her own company, dad a surgeon.

@fazda: if you can afford to buy a quarter of a million rands worth of car, why not. It does not mean that you are stupid.

@smooth: I general I agree that handing the keys of a powerhorse to an 18/19 year old is not the best thing ... but you are making a general statement here which is not applicable to each and every person.

Update: the situation has been sorted. My brother is getting a new car for his missus next year so he will be selling the baby Lexus to Sofia.

Hmmm... part of me wants to back off and be the better person, the rest of me wants to go right on tearing into your inanity, reading back on your posts in this thread just reinforces that desire to be honest.

However: I'll lay off (you are no match for my debate-fu at any rate;)) but I'll warn you not to dish it out if you can't take it.

Your comments were incredibly vitriolic.
You made several huge leaps of assumption.
You made several unfounded judgments of character (the bolded section of your latest post is a case in point, there is a very good chance that if he has that kind of money to spare that he is, in fact: far from 'crazy' or 'stupid'.)

I reiterate: don't dish it out if you can't take it.

That is all.

. sdd is the one wanting to buy an Automatic because he can't drive a stick shift
. He will never admit it
. No father in the world would fork out R 250k for an automatic car for his kid (He'll buy a stick shift.)

I want an Automatic now also  Think I'm getting old :D

Really funny how this thread got derailed into parenting advice...anyway I also know a very rich family (like top 20 in SA) and the dad asked his daughter (whom I met in our first yr at varsity) to pick a car...she chose a morris minor...needless to say us poor okies nearly shyte ourselves and tried to convince her to get a porsche or something...but she was adamant...I guess she just wanted to blend in
