Noticed an entire row of Tinkies at the corner shop has passed it's expiry date and wondered how long I've been eating "old" tinkies:sick:

Do you check when the food your buying expires or do you assume the shop removes old stock at certain intervals.

Well I have been taught by the missus to check expiry dates so it has become a habit.

You won't believe how often we get expired soft drinks at restaurants like Coke ect (check under the can ;) )

Last year there was a Xmas Gammon at one of the supermarkets that had expired a week before

Regularly force them to remove expired items off the shelves :)

Shops aren't allowed to sell products that have passed their expiration date, iirc.
People I know used to buy up Woolworths' expired milkshakes etc and sell them for under half price (and yes, they're perfectly fine then still). Used to be awesome.

Some things, I always check before buying. Bread, cold meats, cheese, milk, fish, eggs etc.

But everything else I just check when using it.

The shops do normally remove old stuff, but they are only human after all and they miss some things. Except Woolworths. They're freaking super-human, I've never found any expired stuff on their shelves.

i assume a good busy store has very quick turn around time on stock so dont bother checking

i got food poisoning from using that judgement ...the creamed spinach i bought was few months old

Tried to buy energy bars at a Cape Union Mart once and they wouldn't sell them to me as they had expired a week before. Not sure if the cashier noticed it, the system somehow kept track of it, or some previous customer had just complained, but I was suitably impressed.

I recently checked the exp date on the shaker of crushed red chilli I sprinkle on my pizza and it said 1996. :o

Still used it but asked my dad to send me a fresh supply from the states. :)

Pick & pay always have youghurt expired or almost to expire on their shelf!

Lots of time also their veggies are already expired (check the potato bags).

Always check in stores the expiry dates. As not all stores will remove the items. they tend to just plead ignorance if you bring it to their attention. Had this before with muffins.

What's the difference between "Best Before Date" and "Sell By Date" ?

they are basically the same thing Best before and sell by dates are usually on items that don't generally go "off" and so they put a date on it but it is usually still consumable for a while after that date.

When it has an expiry date then you should not consume food after that date as it could be "off" and could potentially make you sick

There's your problem.

Always check a potato bag before buying it. Expired potatoes are #@!# disgusting

How do companies like foodies operate then? Most of the stuff is either pass the best before date or very close to it.

This thread has a best before date of 2012 before you necro'd it.
