Hey guys,

What is the best beginner's all round SLR camera? In relation to performance, affordability, lens affordability?

I'm thinking of taking photojournalism next year and I'll need the equipment.

Thanks!!

Here's the DP Review on the Nikon D3100 ... http://www.dpreview.com/news/1008/10081920nikond3100.asp

I prefer Canon, but Nikon would be my 2nd choice brand. I've just ordered the Canon 550D, plus 18-55mm lens plus 55-250mm lens, from ORMS in CAT for R10,000
The 550D is 18MP vs the Nikon's D3100 14MP. Both are capable of HD video recording as well, but I don't think you can adjust the aperture on the Nikon when shooting video

Have a look at the syllabus, if you're not covering video get yourself an older camera with the kit lens and a flash and then start looking at some better glass. I regularly submit photos for publication that were taken with the old 400D + kit lens that I keep in the boot of my car.

Pentax k-x? Could probably even get the kit with two lenses (18-55, 50-200) for the same price as the D3100

Is there a difference?

Yes there is. SLR is a film camera while a DSLR is the same thing but the film is replaced by a digital sensor and a lot of other electronics that go with it.
