Hi Guys

i got a telkom billion 400g router.. the thing is utter rubbish...

i currently have a 4mb line with uncapped data... i use my data mostly (80%) for streaming, online gaming(15%) and p2p (5%)

i want to change my router but not sure what to get... any ideas? i dont have alot of money to splash out now, so something that can prioritize my streaming and gaming would be fantastic and have a strong wireless signal... also, it should not heat up like the Billion, every time it heats up it disconnects and is really frustrating... and 1 more thing, it should also have a usb port

BTW, i spoke to telkom and they dont have any idea when they will upgrade my exchange to 10mb or even vdsl... so im stuck with 4mb for a while....

how much you looking at spending on one?

that way we can see whats the best in your buget :)

Depending on your line quality. If it's good then the Trendchip based TD-W8970 would work great but if your line is not so great then a Broadcom based modem would work better. The TP-Link TD-W8960N is Broadcom based.

My line stats are a fair bit worse with the Telkom 2750U - SNR drops from 25dB to around 10-14dB. :/

Just saying. It could be firmware related as I have not done any upgrades to it or it could be a bad router / batch.

I've had the D-Link 2750U (Non-Telkom version) for about 2 or 3 years now. I had issues with it dropping wireless every now and again but a Firmware update sorted that out.

I've carted it around with me when looking after other peoples houses (so I don't nail their caps / interwebs threshold) and it's hosted a few peeps on a local network for gaming :D

It's a good router. It's seen a fair amount of service and it's still going strong. But I'd definitely go for a TP link if I had to replace it.

I had a Tenda WiFi access point and the WiFi was a little on the slow side for it's specifications on paper. (Just a comment)

Besides this, it never gave any trouble and had very good WiFi range. I recently gave it to a friend as I no longer needed it.

Have this exact same one running at my folks for about a year now I think without any drama.

In the past I did also have wireless issues with a other of their products though. But I've had that with big name brands as well.
