I'm looking for a decent printer for the occasional document. I used to have an inkjet long ago and it was a pain with smudgy ink and slow output.

Is it time to get a small laser or is ink now king?

It would be nice if the thing could be on a small home network as well.

What do you have and would you buy it again?

Ag, any HP, Canon or Epson will do - just make VERY sure that the printer's software drivers support your OS & how much they charge for a replacement ink cartridges.

Stay far away from Lexmark, it's really crappy printers.

I bought a HP 1022nw recently ... very nice laser printer, plus it has a wireless card already installed (as opposed to the cheaper 1022n). don't need a print server as you can print directly to it over the network ... I think I paid R1299 for it

Got one of these (HP Laserject 1020), seems to be pretty decent, obviously not if you need to print colour though.

Pick up a budget black and white laser printer. Samsung has some good ones. Laser printers gives waaaaaayyy less hassles than inkjets, especially if you only print once in a while (inkjets don't like being idle for a couple of days/weeks).

Laser printers are also a lot more affordable in the long run, as you get A LOT more printouts from one cartridge as oposed to inkjets.

The 1022nw is from the 1020 series of printers ... small and compact for your home office desk

Seems like the newer, better model. :) The wireless part looks quite useful actually, where did you get it from?

Looking at the online prices, I might be mistaken with the R1299, probably more like R2000 ... but I can't remember where I got it from. I got it from Makro about 6 months ago

I've got a 'vintage' HP 1220C A4/A3 printer - and it's still going strong!

Think I bought it in 2003 and shipped it home from the UK. Great for docs and printing photos on A4 & A3.

Hp 1018

The HP 1018 is great and is even faster than the older lasers we replaced a HP 5 mp and no problems.
If you need a lot of duplexing then look at a connected copier running costs should be lower with less jams than a desktop.

Sounds like what I need - I'm looking at a picture of it's brother, the 1022 in the Incredible Con brochure "Buy the right printer" and online (R 1,299.95)
..
# Prints up to 18ppm
# 1200 dpi print resolution
# 8MB RAM
# USB 2.0 high speed
# Connection Cable not included
# 1 Year warranty
No DUPLEX (double side printing).
..
If you print a document are the letters on the papaer crisp and clear? i.e. is 1200x1200 good enough.

I'd be very happy with a colour laser, but the price (and the machine size) grows

Others that are in the same class:
LEXMARK E120 LASER PRINTER (R 899.95)
# Prints up to 19ppm
# Print resolution 600 x 600 dpi
# 8MB onboard memory
# USB2.0 connectivity
# 150 Sheet input tray
# Connection Cable not included
# 1 Year warranty

SAMSUNG ML2510 LASER (R 999.95)
# Up to 24ppm at 1,200 dpi
# Compatible with Linux, Mac OS, Windows
# 250 Sheet multi-purpose tray
# Toner saving by 40%
# Standard USB 2.0 & IEEE 1284 parallel dual interface
# 1 Year warranty

The print quality for documents etc. on the 1020 is fine so the 1022 should be the same or better. I'm not a fan of Lexmark printers but that's just me.

1200 DPI is more than enough for text and even photos also you have to check if the shades of grey are important that it is true res for 1200DPI or interpolated. True res is then the way to go.

Nobody should be a fan of Lexmark printers - it's crap!

Makro were selling the HP 1022nw for R1299 clearance, but they were sold out.

They say the 1022 is discontinued. Wonder what will replace it. They are still stocking the inferior 1018.
