As some of u might have realised I am keen on buying a 50" Sony Plasma and it has a DVI cable option. I have been told that is the best option to use, but what input options are there and is it possible to have the DVI option on your devices like DVD player etc and maybe even TV?

This one? http://www.sony.co.za/prod.asp?DTID=1&CID=49&SID=110&PID=1921

If so, there's no real advantage to using the DVI for an analogue signal. I think the unit is supplied with a D-Sub (15 pin VGA) cable to 3 RCAs for a component input from your DVD player.

If you have something with an HDMI output, it might be worth buying a HDMI-DVI cable, but otherwise I would use the analogue connectors for your DSTV (S-Video); VHS (Composite); and DVD player (component).

You can use the DVI for your PC for very big games.

edit: what happened to the BRAVIA?

I watched a Robbie DVD on the tv and the people in the crowd had that blocky type look and apparently that was as a result of a normal video cable being used. I then looked at a Panasonic plasma with a DVI cable and you could see the difference.

What type of connection options do you have on your DVD player? Like arf9999 said, if you've got HDMI on it, then definitely go for the HDMI-DVI cable. But more than likely your DVD player wont have HDMI (since HD isn't really used in SA yet)..then your best bet would be using component to VGA.

I have not got a DVD player yet, so I am starting out from scratch.

normal video? maybe it was a composite cable. if so it would look crap.

You won't get a better picture from DVI than you will from Component.
