Takes the fun out of coffee. ;)

Pods are way too pricey, I'd rather get proper roasted-on-the-day stuff at R35 - R40 per 250g. That'll make 20+ espresso's.

That machine looks seriously scary (not exactly what I want at 5am when I'm seriously in need of my first mug of coffee).

A friend of mine pointed me in the direction of Amazon for coffee machines where there might be a bigger selection, I just haven't had time to smurf Amazon yet.
Maybe I posted an incomplete link, but it did work a few days ago, I think Dion Wired changed their url scheme.

Not the best but my SO bought this one (an impulse buy) just because it has an easy-to-use timer function. You load it up the night before, set the time you want it to start brewing in the morning and go to sleep... waking up to a fresh brew!

Also have that machine. Timer function is nice and the thermos flask prevents the coffee from cooking - handy if you oversleep and your coffee sits around for a while.

Our new machine takes about 30 seconds to heat up and we only have to worry about keeping the water tank and coffee hopper filled.

Hi all

I bought a Russell Hobbs 15 bar espresso machine 2 weeks ago from Makro. R999 with grinder. Don't laugh, Makro had nothing else. :D

http://www.makro.co.za/p/37796/russell-hobbs-coffee-machine-plus-free-bean-grinder/

First one was a dud, must have been a seal broken inside as it leaked everywhere. Got it swapped out and have been really enjoying the new one, up until yesterday where it just seems to have lost pressure.

I can't fill the ground coffee cups as much as I used to, or pack them as I used to. Espresso/cappuccinos are taking much longer to make, resulting in bitter coffee - probably due to the coffee being over filtered. Seems to be a lot of water/steam build up in the machine, and when I take out the arm, it literally pops off and spews coffee and water everywhere.

So while waiting to hear back from RH support (decent support, seems Tedelex/Salton owns RH these days though, hence the quality drop) I am considering other options. Dion Wired have a much bigger selection, any of these good? I know Krups is decent, and Delonghi, also heard about the Nespresso machines but not sure if they only use pods?

Please advise, coffee experts. ;)

I've got that machine (and that Krups grinder)
Grinder is awesome, great value for money.

I have no major complaints with the coffee machine. It's great (for it's price) if you only want to make 2 cups at a time.
I've also found that if you remove the grind-basket straight after drawing a shot that the remaining pressure can lead to a mess. I don't usually have this problem though, as I tend to steam some milk afterwards, which gets rid of the pressure buildup.
Maybe try blowing steam into an empty cup (to avoid mess) to get rid of the pressure if you have to remove the grind-basket straight afterwards.

Only other tip I have is to flush the grouphead in between shots (remove the grind-basket and let the water run through the head into the drip tray). I found sometimes some grinds got lodged in the head if I didn't do this, leading to a loss in pressure.

If you do want to get a different one, Dion Wired have the Krups for R1799. I must say, thought, that my friend has that one, and I've used it and can notice no discernable difference between it and the RH.

Edit: Oh, since you're in Cape Town, let me do my shameless plug for my coffee guys, Rosetta Roastery. I'm not sure if they still do it, but they used to have that same grinder for sale, and it came with 1kg of free beans. Might be worth checking them out, they're a small company, but passionate about their business.

Thanks, yeah going to get the Krups grinder. Happy with the RH when the grind is right. My problem was due to too fine a grind.

I got some coffee from a roaster in Parow the other day, roasted the day before I got it and only R35/250g. Yirgacheffe, Mandheling, African blend, South American blend, and Asian blend... ;)

Update.

MongooseMan: The Krups was out of stock at DW. Was lank bummed after driving from the SSubs just for it. Should have checked before obviously. :D

Decided out of desperation to get Russell Hobbs' new Coffee and Spice grinder for R350. Seems to be a Burr design as one twists the machine half way to adjust at least 10 settings from fine to coarse? Very happy with it at its finest grind, gave me an espresso with a lot more crema than I was used to.

Flip, we need a Dion Wired in the Southern Suburbs ;)

I bought one of these about a month ago, and I use it at least 10-15 times a day. As long as you use the correct grind and take the time to tamp it properly, it makes one helluva good espresso. If you get a bitter taste with little or no crema, then make sure you are tamping it properly. http://www.ineedcoffee.com/00/tamping/

Once you develop the correct technique, this little machine is amazing.
