Good day everyone,

I hope you are well.

I was browsing around to see what coffee Subscription services are available in SA, and I found quite a few. Are any of you subscribed to one of them? If so, what is the variety like?

I am getting my espresso machine this week, and I have bought some bags of beans from Bean There, who themselves have a subscription service, though I would love to find one where you get a range each month from different rosters.

These are the ones I have found:
- Discover great coffee club: https://www.discovergreatcoffeeclub.co.za/ -> [UPDATE] - Have now tried them, got beans that are just over 3 months old - DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!
- Coffee Crate: https://coffeecrate.co.za/
- Bean Box Club: https://beanboxclub.co.za/

Those are the only ones I have been able to find that deliver from a variety of rosters, though Bean Box Club seems to be quite limited in what they might deliver.

I didn’t include subscriptions from rosters themselves as they only offer there coffee, I would like to get a range each month

Has anyone here signed up for any of these or others? I would be interested to find out your thoughts

Kevin

[UPDATE]
I have tried Local Grind (localgrind.co.za) and I am super impressed with them, highly recommended and I will continue to support them.

I am still discovering. Some forum members have also been awesome introducing me to some roasters. Only really interested in specialty grade. Anyways, nice thread @zs-kev .

Also check

Quaffee. They deliver free. Tried various of their blends and varieties, some are quite peculiar and price does not equal quality. The Old School Blend for R200/kg is very good

Thanks for the responses guys.

@RedViking I did see those other threads, though when searching in the forum for coffee subscriptions, I found nothing. I could have asked in one of those, though I dislike threads where there are a million different topics all mashed up, its harder to keep to topics, and harder for other people to find. So hence the new thread.

I will try out Quaffee and all these others, though for the time being I would love to try a range of brands as yes, Quaffee might be fantastic, but who knows what else I might like if I dont try them, hence the reason I would like to go for a subscription service where they just send out a random assortment of coffees each month, and as I find ones I like, I can then start sticking to those in the future.

In my continued search, I did stumble on this one this as well which looks quite nice: https://localgrind.co.za/collections/coffee-subscriptions

Beanbox club didnt work for me... Sister bought it for my birthday, took 6 weeks with nothing. They were helpful in eventually sending an old bag I could get for less in the supermarket and eventually refunding me though. So they are legit, but I certainly didnt have a good experience in Cape Town.

Bean tempted by Quaffee. Maybe as soon as I get my barista express.

Found it was easier to order a few different ones from cape coffee beans when I run out.

What bothers me is lack of information from a lot of places and some of the subscription services. We have a million coffee roasters that started selling with many of them knowing very little about the beans they use.

@richjdavies I have to admit that there selection seems super limited, so on top of that, the fact you had a bad experience, I won't go for them.

@RedViking That is true... Though with Discover Great Coffee Club do show what you gonna get, so could always look them up. With Local Grind it looks like they do a good job at sourcing companies...looking at brands that they offer.

Last i looked at quaffee was over 5 plus years ago how did I forget abt them.... Heads over there right now!

I see I can take my bitcoin over there as well
Warren over there is a great guy btw.. made his money doing something in ATMs/ payments, just started because he likes coffee, I think!

Agree with others looking for something that will send me something from a newish local roaster every week/month. Quaffee Im sure is great, but possibly a bit too advanced (and its all from their roastery)

Genuine question: why? What are the reasons to prefer a subscription over just shopping for and making your own choice of coffee(s) as you go along?

Yes, those that can sell take-away coffee, or can deliver, are allowed to continue to do so; no sitting down, though. I think the subscriptions, though, are for people who want a supply of coffee beans for their machines at home.
