Best connection type for WoW ?

I've returned to WoW Europe after 7 months away from the game. Back then I was getting a ping of 400ms to the realm, but now I get pings averaging at 600ms or higher (Sometimes over 1000ms). This is probably due to the server population increasing or more traffic on my ISP or maybe its related to bugs that may have surfaced with all the patching.

Seeing that there are so many SA players on the Europe and US servers I was wondering what ISP and connection type you folks would recommend to improve latency. At present I am on Webafrica 4GB Unshaped ADSL on a 512K line. Is there a better solution for WoW and/or other international gaming? Perhaps I should try wireless or the VPN solution from OpenWeb ? I was considering HSDPA, but I have no idea what the speeds are like for gaming. I have also been considering upgrading my line to 1024K.

Any suggestions to improve latency to the game in any way would be highly appreciated. Of course it has to be a stable solution (I was thinking of iBurst but after reading that forum section on these messageboards I don't think I can consider them to be a stable solution). Thanks in advance to all that reply

PS. Sorry if the above questions have been asked before.

Registry hack/patch,ADSL with unshaped fibre account

WIRELESS SUCKS HSDPA SUCKS!!@#!#!#! IT sorry i just get emotional.

i play on a 2048/512 line with web africa unshaped, i get latencies of 250, sometimes 220. Last night was doing black temple and my lag was 270 with team speak.

I am on Webafrica 384 unshaped. I run two WoW accounts with latency of around 280 - 500ms. Have you tried switching between WA's Verizon and SAIX network to see which gives you the best connection?

I have done the reghack thing which seems to improve the latency somewhat.

I used to play on Vodacom HSDPA and dumped them (cancelled) due to high latency and random DC's.

How do you get 250ms?! Last night my lag was sitting at around 600ms on an unshaped webafrica account. I don't think I have ever got better than around 400ms on EU Defias Brotherhood.

Also it seems that the zombie shyte is increasing lag exponentially!

Oh yeah on a 4meg line here.

Btw haven't tested in a while but is SAIX or Verizon unshaped better at the mo?

Hey I am having the same problem OP, I have been playing WoW for a while now and I used to settle for around 1kms in Black Temple/Sunwell Plateau and all other raids before them, obviously in 10mans it was a bit better. I am on a Shaped 1024k Telkom account.
It used to be playable and i was used to it but lately after patch 3.0.2 my latency goes up to around 3-4k in raids and pvp bgs which, as u can imagine, makes it unplayable. This ofcourse is sad news for WotLk since i doubt it will get better and i simply cant raid with such *** latency.

Also Apparently the line from the exchange to my house is quite ****ed so anything faster than 1mb and it drops every 5min, now i was wondering if http://www.openweb.co.za/fibre_adsl.php is a good solution? Does it use your existing phone line? Cos if it does it dont think it will fix the problem.

I have also tried the reg hack and it did nothing for me :(

If anyone has had a similar experience or can simply point out any other way around it I would be very thankful, ideally i'd like to move away from a Telkom line because for 5 years they havent managed to fix my line so im over their ****.

Thank you in advance for your replies and thank you OP for making this thread.

P.S: Sorry for the unorganised structure of my post but I wrote it in a hurry :/

im going to get MTN 3G HSDPA, its the only solution for where i am staying - there arent any telkom lines to use for ADSL. are latecy less when you are just freelancing on your own in the game? like lvl 1 - 40 quests?

MTN Hsdpa is not that bad! I get a stable 400 - 500ms, very late at nights around 300 - 400 ms.

I have done all PVE content on it and I PVP with it perfectly too.

I also play on MTN HSDPA, and yes it's in no means better than ADSL but it is a decent solution if you can't get ADSL :)

I am on Telkom adsl get the same about as Jase on WOW.And i did not even do the hackthing.

O yeah and stay away from MTN 3g/hsdpa for gaming on WOW and on local games .

3g/HSDPA vs ADSL
Local games like team Fortress i get 10-20ms with adsl had 150-300 on local with hsdpa.
WOW lately MTN 3g gives me 700ms-1400ms Telkom adsl 280-550ms.Using Telkom as provider too.

It might just be the clarity of my line, on my server ravenholdt it ranges from 240-500 (if the line isnt acting up), on my friends server i got 220 but not often. lately its been around 270-350.

You can also PM draak thats on MTN 3g/hsdpa hes quiting wow till he gets adsl or neotel cause of a 1000+ ms and hes been getting 2kms lately.
And yes i still have to pay my mtn till next year just use it for downloads but did log in

If you really cant get adsl and you REALLY want to play wow use 3g but be prepared for alot of dcs and lag spikes.
And on a side note i live next to MTN tower can throw the damn thing with stone and use e220 modem.

MTN use to be good 8 months ago i had 450-800ms
not lately and check you coverage maps.

Reason pitbulls getting good MS is cause he works for MTN and he doesnt even have cap.

That's beside the point. I still use the normal MTN tower in a normal subburb.

If your having latency issues, have you logged a request with Coverage complaints ? If so do you have a reference number I can have a look at ?

I have not had any issues appart from the last few weeks due to network upgrades. But I take the good with the bad ;) I honestly have no latency issues in my area. I have no dropped connections, Sure I have a lag spike from time to time but that happens.

Anyway, I'm having a blast on MTN HSDPA obvisouly I'm not the only one. Do I think it beats ADSL for gaming, OFC NOT. Would I rather use HSDPA than iBurst/Vodacom and all the other wireless providers, OFC YES.

My 2c.... I have been playing on Lightbringer-Eu for 2+ years now. Up till now I have only had access to Vodacom 3G. It has had its frustrations and there have been times where I wanted to rip their heads off, but on the whole there have been more uptimes than down, and enough speed that I can raid 25man content np.

In MH/BT I have had 400-600ms on a good night (most often), but when it plays up... constant DC  I also am of the opinion that all of the broadband offerings are highly dependent on the usage of your area. I am about to embark down the ADSL path (/cheer..it only took Telkom 3 months to fix a minor cable fault!) but since neither are heavy loaded in my area, ADSL should be a winner for me in terms of stability.

Summary... ADSL unshaped if u can get it, any 3G HSDPA if u cant (but check yr area, sometimes MTN>Voda and vice versa) but wouldnt go less. GPRS = unplayable if u want to group for anything.

:D

Agree most people using Vadocom in WOW complained alot more than the MTN guys.Like i sayd MTN use to be good. And yes they checked my tower
say its fine but my latency was still high. But i could careless thesedays got 4mb unshaped line.
But i did get alot of dcs at start and had alot of TROUBLE with telkom before my line was 100%.

But instalation was fast 1 week after i phoned.

Hey Pitbull, at what speed does your MTN 3G HSDPA run? In your opinion, what can the minimun speed be for the 3G to play WoW without you pulling your hair out?

For me, anything below 1k in PvE is fine if I'm not playing a caster. If I play a caster nothing more than 800ms

I normally play around the 400-600 ms mark average. Some better days, some worst days but I would say about 400-600 is perfect for me

edit:

I just need to add, make sure you get no packet loss and have the best signal spot in your house. Took me a little trial by error but I got the best spot in the house and suffer 0 packet loss.

Dude believe me i live next to the damn tower could really throw it with stones there were ALOT of days i was thinking to do just that before i got ADSL.

At least in Boksburg and in Randburg are MTN is crap you get 800-2k
WOW is playable at 1000ms anything more suck alot.
And if you wana PVP ill say 600ms atleast. My friend is still major WOW fan hes got 5 lvl 70s for him to quit wow means that connection must be really crap.

ADSL will work you out about R700-1000 4 gig unshaped a month MTN for 2 gig cap is costing me R500 Now i am paying both cause i could not live with crappy 3g at least for few months more then its cheers to MTN.

Atm MTN is just being used to get patches for my games.
