Best cooling for 8500GT?

Howdi.

So my quest to get my machine cool and quiet on a tight budget is nearing completion.

I have turned the 20cm propellor on the side of my Aerocool case off, and added a 12cm, silent exhaust fan at the rear to expell the hot air pushed out by the 12cm fan at the front.

The heatsink and fan on the AMD X2 5200+ is still stock. I might look into getting some kind of cooling for this. It is not too loud but it is quite warm...I have seen a few options for around the R200 mark.

Now, the 8500GT is another story. I managed to get the one with the fan on the GPU and not the heatsink so it is not only LOUD but also warm. :( I want to remove the stock fan and put something quiet and cool on there. (and cheap) Any ideas?

Bear in mind that this is not for overclocking purposes. I just need the machine to run quiet and cool when idling. Which it is not doing right now...

Ok, maybe you can see if you can buy a quietish slot type cooler that can blow over you 8500GTs heatsink and you can turn off your 8500GT fan.

In the BIOS you can enable Cool & Quiet and then where you setup the Screen Saver you go into power settings and you can have your PC running at Max battery mode or something (in WixXP you might need the CPU driver from AMD installed too). It will downclock the CPU when is doesnt need extra processing power and it also lowers the voltage which means a cooler running CPU. Happens instantanious and has no performance impact.

Cool. Thanks for feedback. I saw one of those slot-cooler jobbies yesterday for like R100 or so. It was blue and looked pretty decent. Just wondered how quiet it would be. maybe I will give that a try then.

I will try that cool n quiet option now as well...and try that max battery mode as well. :)
 
Well, any mode other than standard desktop mode should enable cool and quiet to work if its enabled in the BIOS. You can easily check it with CPUz program or just checking your speed in system properties while the PC isnt processing anything...

I know the slot coolers you are tlaking about, but unfortunately I dont know how noisy they are, so buy on own risk...

I can't find this cool n quiet about which you speak in the BIOS . :( The CPU was running nice and cool according to the BIOS though, so that is good...

I have that slot fan. Its good value for money, but its not silent.

I cant tell just how loud it is because my cpu fan is very loud.

Its kinda quiet on low settings (cant hear it against cpu fan running on slow), but you start to hear it once you turn the speed up.

Works well for the budget tho, keeps my 7600gs cool. Im just not sure if it'll be just as noisy as your stock gpu fan (remember that its two fans on the slot card)

EDIT: Also, it not an exhaust.. just two fans on a card. Sybaritic has a few options, including the exhaust type ones

I see...:( The 12cm exhaust fan I got makes almost no noise at all. That is what I need really.

The dude in the shop reckoned it was cos the fan has ball bearings and also that the bigger the fan, the quieter it is in general. Like 8cm ones tend to be louder than 12cm...

Those ones with the exhausts look like an option. Would they be enough cooling for me to be able to disable the stock fan on the gfx card or are they meant as an addition...

Also, I was looking at something like this
as a more fixed means of compltely replacing the stock fan...it says its silent :)
 
slightly off topic here but your PSU is the worst culprit for noise if that's a problem besides your GPU cooling.

Yes indeed. That is the next target after the fan on the 8500.

My mate bought some fanct Zalman jobbie which looks cool, is quiet and cool. But it set him back like R500. You got any suggestions as to something a bit cheaper that might do the job or is it worth spending the 500 bucks to get the results that i want?

Zalman VF700 AlCu - aluminum + copper fin + 8 x vga memory heatsink included , support silend/ normal mode ; 2 ball bearing 80mm fan ; speed: 1350/ 2650 rpm ; noise level : 18.5/ 28.5dB , 180g - pls note : not to be used with Matrox

Should retail for about R220 to R250 and will be more than enough.

PSU wise I've never had problems with the AOpens, they seem to have pretty silent fans that stay silent...

I am shopping around for a REAL PSU right now and you know for under R500 there isn't much. Actually for R500 for a zalman, that sounds like a really good deal. Only fans/PSU's with the words stealth attract my attention. As for GPU fanless coolers, post if you see anything cool. Also you got a northbridge fan on your MOBO? I noticed mine which has no fan gives ALOT of heat and affects the temp inside the case alot. that's also an area for investigation...

So I have been to Computermania and PC Gameworld to check out said products...

The CPU coolers they had were nice and I think would do the job nicely.

The problem I have resides with the GPU cooler. This is where most of the noise is coming from currently. (wish I had got the one with the heatsink, or a decent card...) The replacements for this stock fan, are all fan-based as well. And as they are all small fans, they run loud as well :(

I don't think there is a solution here, cept perhaps to get another card, but then the money spent on the 8500GT would be well and truly wasted ...:(

you seem to hate noise lol

my pc runs quite load with the fans doesnt really bother me

A lot of noise!! That little fan on the card is the problem. When i put my finger on it to stop it, the PC is nearly silent...
 
Did you look or ask for that Zalman I mentioned? Its for graphics cards and has a nice quiet 80mm fan (thats not small :)), it speed adjustable too...
