Best driving techniques/tips/advice

On a 2 lane or more road avoid sitting in someones blind spot. Move past them or behind them.

If you in the lane next to a truck on a corner be ready for him to move into your lane, more so if he's going above 60.

Simple rule: Keep left, pass right

....and if you see a white ford coming up behind you, move over. It'll keep me happy ;)

With my 100,000km+ in the Transkei and witnessing 3 accidents and having COUNTLESS close shaves, the rule I live by is:

Think for everyone around you, learn to read traffic flow & driver intentions before they even happen. To improve your safety, you must at all times be ready to give up YOUR right of way.

(If you're approaching a blind rise in a double lane, try to keep left even if the double lane belongs to your side. There will usually be an oncoming chancer crossing a double barrier over a blind rise. Again, sacrificing your right of way to ensure your safety)

When you are being overtaken, for the love of all that is holy, do not accelerate.

Not to mention that it is illegal.

This might just be me but I'm always careful when switching lanes on the highway for this scenario:

I've seen countless close calls because the guy in the left and right hand lane want to switch to the middle lane at the same time and both drivers only check their side mirrors and blind spots.

Again... It might just be me

No it's not only you - I see that happening 2 or three times a day coming in and out of Durban on the M4. These Cretins don't know what the term blind spot means and as for actually checking before moving across....they've never heard of that either!!

Seriously? You are distracted by headlights?

Seriously? You do not focus your attention elsewhere (even if only for a split second) when seeing lights during daytime, especially in your mirrors?

When driving behind a truck, make sure that you can see its side-mirrors. If you can't see its side mirrors, then the driver can't see you.

Yes I do. It's not a distraction. It's situational awareness.

In addition to the lane changing thing above - your indicators indicate your intent to turn/switch lanes. It is not a "watch out I'm turning NOW, get out of my way" warning light!

Any indication is better than a sudden swerve into my lane though.

I find quite often at robots where there are two lanes turning in the same direction, people on the inside lane tend to drift over into the outside lane, perhaps they didn't realise there were two lanes.

And the same in 2 lane circles. If people are in the outside lane, and don't know you're coming up on the inside, they'll often cut the lanes so they can drive straight through the circle.

This happens quite often to me, but never been involved in an accident as a result, because although I know they're doing something wrong, I go in watching what other people are doing and react accordingly.

Be vigilant!

the opposite of this grinds my organ. People who skip a long queue of right turning vehicles and turn right from the centre (straight only) lane just because there are two lanes in the road they're turning in to.
Fredman and 5th in Sandton is a case in point. And people do the something turning right from Sandton drive into William nicol.

I absolutely agree with you, I was specifically talking about two lanes marked for turning in the same direction
