Hi guys.

Need advice on what router to get for a new fibre setup.

Network setup is home gaming pc in top room where fibre connection should be installed. One office pc down stairs, 2 smart tv's, one ps4 and a multitude of tablets and smart phones.

I know I will get free router from my isp but from what I have found out , the one being offered is only wifi n not ac. For my needs need a faster router.

Max budget is R5k.

Ask the ISP if they can provide you with a router that also has Ethernet or if they have any other router options.

For your needs you would probably have to place a AP downstairs as well... Get a TP-Link ArcherC7 or C9 for upstairs and another for downstairs.
Or Cheapo router upstairs and two Unfi AC AP's, one upstairs and one downstairs
And connect both AP's to router upstairs via ethernet

+1 for TP-Link Archer routers. Depending on budget, size of room etc even a C2 in the top room at your gaming PC might do the trick, then a C7 or C9 down stairs where you have more devices, add TP-Link Gigabit switches if you run out of ports.
Wire up everything you can, gaming PC, office PC, smart TV's etc, so that only phones, laptops and tablets are on the wifi.
Try to use CAT6 if your budget allows, also run a CAT6 cable between the router in the top room and the one down stairs.

Would an Asus ac rt 88 or asus rt 5300 ac be able to cover more range then the tp link or would I still need ap's?

TP-Link making some solid routers these days, been using them for the best part of the last 7 years and they continue to impress.

And if you experience dead spots...

With a max budget of R5k this would be pushing the envelope but I reckon you'd be guaranteed stellar performance regardless of where in the house you using it..

I'm using a D9 currently, but in a relatively small house. On the 5Ghz band coverage is solid within about a 7 metre radius but obviously declines rapidly beyond that. 2Ghz much further.

Stream effortlessly to 2 HTPC's, one 3 metres away and the other about 6 metres away. 45gb blu ray file, no sweat...

Use totolink wireless usb adapters for maximum throughput. Wireless file transfers run at around 30-35MB/s...

Generally very satisfied with my local network...

From my experience, wifi travels very well through floors. My house is very expansive (two large double story areas separated by corridors top and bottom), and we get by very happily with 2 indoor UniFi APs and an Outdoor+ UniFi AP to cover the garden and outbuildings. Each indoor AP is on the top story, roughly in the middle of that 'block' of the house. Wifi is rock solid everywhere.

I recommend wiring all the APs together btw. Took around 300m of network cabling to do my home network.

Ask the ISP if they can provide you with a router that also has Ethernet or if they have any other router options.

That's a sure way to end up with a crap overpriced router. Wouldn't recommend.

Except with Crystal Web - the hardware options on their website seem good value.

I would suggested something like Ubiquiti Unifi AC APs and then use the router from ISP as router only.

AP: https://scoop.co.za/ubiquiti-unifi-dual-band-ac-long-range-ap.html
Router: http://www.wootware.co.za/tp-link-tl-wr840n-300mbps-wireless-n-router.html

shop.dbg.co.za had better prices than Scoop back when I ordered all my Ubiquiti equipment, and a larger selection.

They seem to have a much smaller selection and most is out of stock :/

Times change I guess. If the price disparity still exists then I would order what I can from DBG.

That's router you posted has no wifi ac. Why would one buy a router with no ac wifi?

Why is it of any concern what wifi the router has, if the wifi is going to be disabled? In a Ubiquiti setup the router functions as a modem only.

Ah ok, didn't know it works like that.

Ubiquiti UniFi access points broadcast wifi and intelligently hand devices over between one another to give the devices the best possible connection. As opposed to the usual method of a device needing to lose signal before seeking another access point. It's really cool, but it involves disabling wifi on your router as the router is too dumb to join the party. :p

Evening stefan9, we of course recommend the DrayTek devices to ensure peak performance.

Check out these two MyBB articles about this very topic:
Router - https://mybroadband.co.za/news/indu...to-fibre-get-the-best-router-for-the-job.html
WiFi AP - https://mybroadband.co.za/news/industrynews/200656-can-your-wifi-speed-keep-up-with-fibre.html

Just shout if we can help at all, or connect you with a reseller in your area.

Your ceiling points are nearly R5k each. That's incredibly poor value compared to Ubiquiti UniFi products, considering how rock solid they are for under half the price.

Evening Bryn,

Resellers are free to set their own pricing, though I'm sure with some looking around, one would find significantly different results.

Will be happy to put you in touch with a reseller in your area.
