Im in need of a firewall for my PC because my brothers PC is a virus farm. And please dont say Zonealarm and blackice ZA causes crap and spams me and blackice BSOD's me. It would be nice if the firewall had the option to block a specific IP aka my dads and brothers.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall ........... nothing has gotten through it :D

its a really nice firewall thanx for helping me.

Check out this review of free firewalls:

@Mephisto, maybe you could post a comment about Sygate on there, as it doesn't feature in the review.

@Noah, since you are using a network, maybe check out a hardware firewall such as Smoothwall, so you wouldn't need a firewall on each pc, as well as having the power to block certain categories of content such as porn etc.

Comodo has been rather consistent but is a bit of a pain with its continuous popups. Also don't put too much faith into a firewall and neglect your Anti-Virus. The best way to test is to download a "test" virus. This is a text file with a text string that all AV companies use to test their apps with. You will be surprised at how many fail here.

Its rather easy for applications to port-forward to your box using even one open port. Blocking a IP is good, but the offending party could also be IP Masquerading or coming in through a different one.

Problem is most new viruses will try to replicate themselves - and chomp your cap up.

It's either installing Smoothwall on your perimeter and limiting bandwidth wastage, or moaning about being capped every month.

Your call.

but i dont have that much money or influence in the family to buy that kind of thing. hell i cant even afford games. :(

Comodo is Free. It's a firewall with HIPS. It takes a while to setup and to OK what you know is legit first, but afterwards you're set. Add a good free AV program and you're set. Make sure to set all the Advanced settings,
like Defence+ in Comodo Firewall Pro.

Comodo works great..if you disable the HIPS part of it (Defender+). If one doesn't disable it then using the PC feels like one continuous session of 20 Questions.

do you ahve to pay for the software
and how would it work aka do i have to put the router behind it or what.

The software is free:).

The config would be something like:

ADSL router --> Smoothwall --> network switch --> pcs.

You will need two network cards in the Smoothwall.

network switch hmmm in other words all pc's are connected to a hub and from that hub to crappy pc with smoothwall and then my router sounds cool all i need now is a crappy pc and a hub.

Have a look at this:

http://www.pcflank.com/leaktests_info.htm

From the page:
On this page, you'll find introductory information about all existing leaktests, along with aggregate firewalls' pass stats against those tests. At the end of the page you will find an advanced leaktests information page explaining leaktests in detail and providing extensive breakdown of firewalls' performance when they are subjected to leaktests. Please note that only commercial firewalls participate in the testing, and some pre-Windows2000 tests have now been revoked. Firewalls are being tested at default configurations; higher level of security for participating firewalls might yield better results.

PC Flank builds programs that test your firewall and other security apps thats Internet based. This can give you an idea of which Firewall to chose. ;)
