And how are the repair costs these days on Renault? My ex got a Renault for free (gift) and she has spent > R100K fixing the car in the last 4yrs. Put me off buying a Renault.
True of all late model cars. 90000km is low mileage. If the car is in good condition, good service history, there's no reason why you should have a problem. A lot depends on how you perceive vehicle maintenance. If you're willing to maintain your car properly, you shouldn't have problems. If you do low mileage, your annual maintenance is likely to be reasonable. We bought the car from a reputable dealer which included a free 30 day 1000km warranty. The 90000km major service was done immediately by the same dealer.
It depends what you want. The OP has R70k to spend. I hope he has the common sense to understand that you have to budget for maintenance. If not perhaps he should get a cherry or some **** small car. Based on what he said: Golf 4 mileage is likely to be over 160000km, same with an Astra or other hatch not to mention those year models are 2000-2002, so the maintenance cost over the next 3 years will be higher. Resale value after 3 years i.e. in 2013? 2000 Golf 4 with 205000km vs 2005 Renault Megane II with 135000km. What do you think will be higher? And finally which rates better in the looks, classyness, etc? A matter of taste obviously but late model megane v old golf. For me the Renault wins hands down.
His other options for the price range are:
Hyundai Atoz 1.1 (Late model - 2006 with under 60000km)
Hyundai Getz 1.4 (2004 with 90000km)
VW Golf 4 1.6 (2000 to 2002 with 160000+km)
Opel Astra (2000 to 2002 with 160000+km)
Demo Cherry or some sh|t car
My other suggestion would be a BMW E46 318i or 320i (1999 to 2003) with under 150000km mileage for between R60000 and R75000. Choose very carefully, but these are brilliant cars.
