Best game for offline adhoc multiplayer ?

Can anyone tell me what is a good game that will allow me to play multiplayer with a friend offline without needing an online connection, so i simply want to make an adhoc connection and play against ot with a friend in co-op mode against the AI.
 
Any game that does not run on code which is "such useless dumb software to actually SELL to the masses".

Starcraft, Warcraft are probably the common ones you are looking for.
 
Thanks guys worms i have WMD and it needs an online connection, what else is there ?
 
Go old school.

Quake 3 Arena
Unreal Tournament 2004

For coop you could look at Grim Dawn.
 
Borderlands as mentioned, definitely..
Also Gears of War, can not recall if we played the 1st one and if it was the 2nd one. Think it was GoW2...
 
Thanks a few good games you guys mentioned and some i will try out this weekend with my cousin. Old skool is just fine, any other types than first person shooters ?

i have one: CNC generals, loads of fun multiplayer, but anything else, many a times even the simple games like worms are lots of fun for lan gaming.
 
Starcraft 1,
Counter-strike 1.6.
Definitely Warcraft 3 with the custom maps (Tower defense, dota etc.).
Half-Life with sven coop addon, can even play HL1 story co-op :D fun !
 
Torchlight 2 as well...
A classic we as a family always enjoy when getting together is Empire Earth... the first one with Art of Conquest expansion.

In order of highest recommendation:

Portal 2
Borderlands 2, 1, TPS
Diablo 2
CIV 5
Unreal Tournament 3, 2004
Sven (mod for half-life source to play multiplayer)
Left for dead 2,1

And if you have an awful amount of free time: Baldur's Gate Remastered 1, 2
 
Supreme commander : Forged Alliance should keep you busy for a good while
