Hi Folks,

REALLY need some good advice here...
I want to give my son the (currently) best gaming machine for his 21st...

He can build it if I buy him the components....I have been told that this is the best value for money way of doing it....

I have no idea what to buy him so please give me suggestions...

He plays WOW and is in one of the top Raiding Guilds so apparently FPS and MS etc are very important

Thanks for the help...
Linda

That's relative. :D First thing first. What is the budget anticipated?

The best pc would set you back R100k easy. So give us a rough budget.

What is your budget you would like to spend? I could get you a PC exceeding R300k if you are keen.

NAG Dream Machine will cost roughly 30K if not a little less actually :)
With that ou'll be hard pressed to find a better machine or one that will deliver even 10fps more for twice the price.

Im sure the OP has a more conservative budget :p

Having him assemble the machine himself is all fine and well, until one of the components does not work, and when you take the part back to where you bought it from, they're going to wonder how on earth your can claim that the broken part is their fault, and not your son's fault.

I am pretty sure that NAG magazine still publishes the parts of their dream machine every month. Though I would wait for somebody to corroborate my thinking before you go out and spend R42 on a magazine.

I would instead get somebody who offers a 1 year or 2 year warranty to assemble and prepare the machine, that way you completely avoid the bad parts problem.

EDIT:

Oh yea, get your son to check that the correct parts are in before paying for the machine.

Why would someone need a 30k machine to play WOW?

Seriously i7 system with 5870 and 4 gb memory with a ssd should easily do the trick.

I would say a REALLY good but well priced PC will be in the region of R14000. Core I7, 6GB memory, 1TB drive, ATI 5850, Case, 650watt psu, and HD LCD screen

ah back in the days of the conroe chip.. those late nite wow nites and KFC in the evenings mmm.

If he's not an overclocker, get an i5 instead of i7. Performs almost the same due to a more aggressive turbo boost and is cheaper. The motherboards for i5 are also cheaper. Make sure you get a HD5870.
