Im looking to buy a gamming laptop as i move around alot and its a mission lugging around a big pc.

Any advice on what to look at?

I DONT KNOW !!!!!! **** **** I DONT KNOW OHNOEZ !!!???!!?``

Not sure what a "gamming laptop" is....

But for a gaming laptop, make sure you have at least 15k to spend if you want something noteworthy.

ps. Have you tried researching? My guess us this is your way of researching it huh?

Don't buy a gaming laptop, it is 3 times as expensive as a desktop and ages 3 times faster. They don't update the drivers frequently enough and within a year you will no longer be able to play games that you could easily play for another few years on a desktop machine.

Advice is to specify a budget first, it's generally a good starting point. Then determine what else you will be using it for, then consider if it's really worth the amount you will need to spend.

I have a (outdated) gaming laptop I bought 2nd hand. No problems so far, although it does not have very good specs anymore. I also advise to get a desktop instead. Gaming laptops are heavy, most of them chow batteries liek anything, they get old very fast, and generally the little programs for the webcam, card reader, etc are very RAM hungry and slow your system down a lot. This is coming from a Toshiba X205 owner, my 2 cents worth

Asus - the Lamborghini gaming model is on pre order at the moment, what a beast of a machine, going to be a while before that thing gets outdated with its 3GB Nvidia 460m graphics, Blu Ray, 16GB memory and 1.5TB HDD space .

Asus G73.
I've had mine for almost a year. I runs all the latest games smoothly.
I use this thing permanently at work and at home (it takes a LOT of abuse) and I've never had any problems.
It's still faster than the top-end desktops they provide me with on some projects (I'm a contractor).
At the time it cost me R16K, a similar spec. desktop would have cost me around R13K (So the "It's twice or 3 times more expensive" argument is bull****, unless of course you do the stupid thing and get an over priced Alienware Notebook).

Specs:
Intel Core i7 720QM (The new ones have Sandy Bridge so they're definitely much faster)
8GB DDR3 RAM
2 x 500GB 7200RPM HDD's (I use the one 500GB as an external now, with a 120GB Mushkin Callisto Deluxe SSD as my System Drive)
ATI Radeon mobility 5870 (Similar to a desktop spec. Radeon 5770)

Newer games I play that surpass the critical 30fps mark:
Dead Space 2
Mass Effect 2 (This one loves quad core)
Crysis 2
Battlefield Bad Company 2

I got the following:

Acer Aspire AS7552G-6851 Notebook, Black - AMD Phenom II Black Edition Quad Core X920, 17.3" LED-backlit, 6GB RAM, 1280GB HDD, ATI Radeon HD 5650, DVD-writer, Wireless N, Gb LAN, Webcam, HDMI, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Its a very nice laptop for gaming. I got it from overseas - and even if you buy it overseas (including shipping) its still cheaper than buying it in SA.

If you were gonna pay R13k for that machine when it came out you'd be getting ripped off. Plus, desktop counterparts are faster than their mobile variants with the same or similar model names.

Doesn't matter if they're not faster, what matters is if they're fast enough. Like it or not some people prefer to have the power of a desktop in a form factor they can carry around with them wherever they go.
For the decrease in speed you get from mobile variants what you get is: much better power management and consumption, very low noise (or no noise at all), mobility, non-existent hardware compatibility issues, fully encompassing warranties and in some cases built in spill damage etc. warranties.

I personally think a good gaming notebook with you most of the time is much better than having a machine that just sits there at home all the time.
The extra cash I spend to get that form factor is definitely worth it.

If you don't have the need to spend that extra cash on a gaming notebook then don't buy one. But telling people that gaming notebooks are 2 or 3 times more expensive than a desktop counterpart is a lie. There are options out there, and some of them are really good.
You clearly forgot that less than a decade ago high-end notebooks could easily reach R40K. These days R15K will get you a really good machine.
Personally I've given up with all the silliness that comes with building high-end desktops just so that I can play a game now and then.

To sum up using an admittedly lame analogy: I'd rather have a Ferrari F430 that I can drive around in wherever I like, than a race car spec upgraded Toyota Supra than I can only race around in on specific tracks

can you carry your desktop from one place to the other and have it on your lap, while watching tv etc?...end of argument

I have a Toshiba X305, with Dual Nvidia 9700's and 2x3.5's 250 gig in raid config bought 3 years ago (because I was traveling allot and did not feel like having a PC on a plane)
Was about R15K at Mustek and I can say it was money well spend. Sure it was a monster and not exactly a Laptop(Want to see you play games with that on your lap, say good bye children) But it did the trick.

It still plays today's games although its kinda retired as I stopped traveling. It now became my Media Center PC as it has HDMI + S/PDIF and a remote control.

Check out the new X500's http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/qosmio/X500

Most brand names have Gaming laptops but they are not cheap.... and not exactly a laptops even battery last for like 15 min's when playing the latest FPS :)

Edit: sorry it was R11k, just checked the invoice.

The problem with the internet these days is that there is a lot of conflicting views on everything.

Was thinking of maybe looking into Apple but im not sure if I play online if I will be able to Play on PC servers?
I dont really have a limit and i know they crazy priced which is why im also considering building my own PC but as I said I would love to be able to transport it and i dont have much space in my flat to put a PC.
