i want to take out gap cover, i have researched a few and they all are much of a muchness, can any recommend which company is good with regards to service, handling of claims etc

these are some that i have seen

Complimed, stratum, liberty, old mutual etc

I've got with Liberty - haven't used it so can't really say.
Cheap enough to have it sitting in the background.

The best gap cover provider in my opinion is Zest Life - Liberty outsources gap cover services to them so you can go through Liberty or direct through Zest Life for the same price. It's not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

We're with Complimed. Payment hasn't been as quick as it could be, but they're generally quite good to deal with.

Im with Complimed, and over the past 5 years I have had 4 or 5 claims, they promise to pay out within 14 days after receiving claim, and all but once they have managed to stick to it.
No issues with them at all.

anyone know of gap cover options that specifically will still give you co-payment benefits for select out-of-hospital procedures even if you do not have MSA or any such benefit on your medical aid plan? (e.g. Discovery Coastal Core)

I almost fell into this trap with Turnberry, luckily I inquired before signing up, the monthly premium is very reasonable, but only shortfalls or gaps are covered (I guess that sounds obvious in hindsight) i.e. anything that your medical aid doesn't at least partially cover is not covered at all by their gap cover as it is not seen as a "gap".

In the world of discovery that means moving up to a plan that will run R800 more a month (with one dependent) and which is a bit rough compared to the gap cover premium. Curious if any gap cover options do not have this "trap" to fall into?

Err, I'm just guessing here, but I'm pretty sure what you're looking for doesn't exist. At least not at the R200-300 that GAP covers charge. Why would one even need to bother with a medial aid if that were the case? :P

Also Gap tends to only cover in hospital procedures, haven't seen a gap covering out of hospital.

Dude. Gap cover isn't so you can take hospital plan and still have day to day benefits. Gap cover is for shortfalls, like your plan only paying scheme rates while specialist charges 3x scheme rates. Not going to find gap cover for those GP visit's lol

not true, many cover out-of-hospital for specific things e.g. CAT scans, the issue being they won't cover that if your medical aid doesn't e.g. if you have MSA that covers even R1 of that CAT scan you will find gap cover options that cover the rest, but if your medical aid doesn't cover at least R1, well you are sh_t outta luck

EDIT: just an example, not marketing as I didn't go with them given my issue with their rules http://turnberry.co.za/products/products-2016/proselect-care/

Co-payment cover of R15 000 per in-hospital admission per insured, including co-payments for MRI, CT and PET scans done in an out-patient facility

did I say anything about day to day? I could give a flying "F" about those expenses, couple of hundred a pop every now and then, what I mean by out-of-hospital is the same as the medical aid definition: any procedure where you don't spend at least one night in hospital, even if it physically happens in a hospital

for example: CAT scans, MRI, emergency room + ambulance that took you there etc ... those come with hefty price tags and if you ask me it is BS that a hospital plan doesn't cover it unless you have "day-to-day" benefits, what is even worse is even if you get gap cover it would still not be covered.

which is where the initial question came from

We built a GAP cover comparison table - its relatively easy to compare

http://wellspent.co.za/resources/gap-cover/

You can break most of them down into a fairly decent pool of comparable features.
These are the options on the high-end from each insurer, but that is a function of having a percentage maximum rate of coverage, i.e. you can get cheaper options from these providers, but they max out at 200% or 300%.

Hope this helps! We can answer pretty much any technical Q you might have on GAP cover, so feel free to ask.

Sirago any good?

EDIT: nevermind, see them there on the site.

What pisses me off is that I signed up for gap cover with them and then not long after that they introduced "gap cover ultimate".

So basically I have half a gap cover. Medical aid and insurance industry is worse than the finance companies
