Best Gigabit Router?

So currently we have a Netgear DG834GU Router and I am looking into getting a gigabit router, now the past two routers (Marconi Premium Combo, Billion 800 VGT, replaced by the Netgear) have been from Telkom on the 24 month contract, so signing contracts with Telkom is/won't be a problem.

My question is what would the best router (Gigabit, Wireless N) be, reason I am asking is that I hear different routers can affect the ADSL connection, living quite far from the exchange I'd like the router to handle the connection as best as possible.

Any suggestions?

Having a gigabit router won't improve your ADSL connection at all, and the gigabit routers that includes an ADSL modem are really scarce and quite expensive.
The only one that I know of, which is also very expensive, is the Linksys WAG320N ~ R1300.
IMO the Cisco/Linksys routers are amazing, but their ADSL modems aren't that great in terms of SNR margins, which you'll need lots of if you're living far from the DSLAM/exchange.

What you could do instead, which I'd actually recommend, would be to get a Gigabit router with Wireless N that does not include an ADSL modem. eg. TP-Link WL1043ND ~ R600 / Linksys E4200 ~ R1400 / Netgear WDNR3700 ~ R1400
Then you link that router to an existing ADSL modem that gives you the best SNR margins, whether its an Netgear, Marconi or Billion one. In my experience, the Marconi, D-Link & TP-Link ADSL modems give the best SNR margins.

So if you just want to improve your ADSL's speed, I would suggest that you rather just invest in a cheap D-Link or TP-Link ADSL modem, rather than spending money on a gigabit router that won't help at all.

Hi thanks I understand that having a Gigabit router won't improve my connections, all it would improve is the transfer speed over LAN, however I think that I can look into the option that you provide getting a router and modem.

I was browsing the Telkom Website, and I'd like to know if the Siemens Gigaset 762 SX provides decent SNR margins and maybe I can just couple it with a Wireless N network repeater or something?

I opted rather than getting a gigabit router(which is kak exp) i kept my normal router and just got gigabit switches, so at the moment i have one cable running from my router into a switch and then a couple computers and a media player in the switch, then another gigabit switch with more pcs and another two media players! Gigabit is great for network copying!

The Siemens Gigaset 762SX provides very good SNR margins, but paying R1400 for a router + modem that doesn't even have gigabit LAN. Wireless N or USB ports is just silly.

The ADSL modems that I always suggest are:
D-Link DSL-2500U (~R200), which is basically just an ADSL modem, since it has only 1x 100Mbps LAN and no WiFi at all
TP-Link W8960N (~R550), which has 4x 100Mbps LAN ports and 2.4GHz Wireless N with MIMO (Multiple In & Multiple Out) feature

Those 2 modems are very good value for money, and they both have very good SNR margins.

Using your current equipment and just adding an 8 port unmanaged gigabit switch is also not a bad idea, like Feaksta suggested. Great, here I was thinking that the Gigaset was a Gigabit router :wtf:, talk about misleading...

I'll look into the various options provided here.
