Hey

I want to buy a GPS for NAVIGATION only, no mp3 player and all the other gadgets available. :D

Which one is the best option out there?

The best for navigation is the Garmin Nuvi 200, Going for about R2000 these days, very good little GPS, would def recommend it

As far as GPS subscription is concerned, I dont believe there is any, definitely not on Garmins units.

Yes, its free, no subscriptions.
I have the Garmin Nuvi 310, and the damn thing keeps on putting me on crap routes. I actually find it easier to use a normal map and plan the route myself.

But if you really want one, go for the Nuvi 200. They have a hidden feature which enables you to keep a track log. This is a really nice feature that not a lot of people know about it. You can then analyze everything on your pc, and see exactly what speed you drove, and when, and it also does not stick you to the road. You could even use this to create your own offroad track/route.

If by navigation you mean routing, then there is a lot available.
Look at garmin (which has good maps, but map updates is very costly) or some of the others (as long as they have local maps with updates available) I will think twice about the TomTom in SA as the support is non-existent (As a manufacturer you do not stop support and only a few months later negotiate support via a different company... You sort it out before you discontinue support).

If you are actually meaning navigating, like going to a certain gps coordinates (which might not be on a road), I will definitely not buy a streetpilot or similar routing gps, as their off road capabilities are not too good. They will compensate for an possible error in the maps and show you in the wrong place.
In that case I will look at a garmin.

Garmin FTW the Nuvi 200 is a brilliant little unit for simplified navigation with very little bells and whistles.

Garmin is more in SA than TomTom - meaning support etc is better.

Go for Garmin!!!

There is a well known saying in computer circles... GIGO... the Garmin plots your route based on your settings. You can choose shortest route or fastest route. You can choose to avoid freeways, toll roads etc. If you have the wrong settings the unit plots the route based on this info. Change the settings if you are not happy.

Garmin is the leading GPS on the market. I like TomTom, but their support was pulled from SA for some absurdly strange reason (ie none at all). However I have heard that TomTom might be coming back. TomTom actually started gaining ground on Garmin here...
