Which graphics card is the best for overclocking (AMD OR NVIDIA)? Does the motherboard, etc affect how much a graphics card can be overclocked?

AMD/Nvidia aren't graphics cards, they are designers/manufacturers of GPU's.

You need to be waaay more specific as there are hundreds of graphic card options out there.

Motherboard can affect overclockability if the MB is really poor quality and cannot deliver enough power to the card. However, this is normally not a major consideration.

If you're really interested in overclocking have a look at the forums at http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/ There's way more information there than you'll ever get here, although can be a little OTT.

lol, well, I've always been a ATI fan, I mean, my little x1600pro ddr3 has been overclocked to decent overclocks. I got the GPU up from 583mhz to 649mhz and the memory from 694mhz to 790mhz and it run at a good temp (no more then 50 degree C) and there was no artifacts and no crashes.

best overclocked GPU i had was the 6800XE....
From 275mhz to 450mhz and stable...couldve gone way more though...

Only thing was there was no temp sensor on those so i smelt burnt plastic or whatever after two 3dmark tests...so took it back. Brought it as Zap in Bright waters for R500

That clock almost doubled...not surprising though it was an underclocked 6800GT...I unlocked all pipelines and everything too XD

OC is so stupid:confused:
buy a new card, overclock it and mess it up and give it back:confused:
just buy a card you can afford. or save up and buy one you really want:mad:

Y don't u just buy a xfx card or asus?? most of there card's is standard overclocked.saves u the time and possible pc damage.

Well in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing, OC'ing can provide very healthy performance gains for free. So be careful who you cover with your blanket statements!

Well I know how to overclock, it still worked fine...just maybe smelt a bit funny.

Overclocking is very dangerous without a temp sensor.

But anyways, overclocking is just to get the most value out of your money.
If you know what you doing that is.

And not everyone has enough spare change to "just" get a card they want

Well, if you knew what you were doing you wouldn't have smelt anything funny, would you.

Of course you monitor temps, and use appropriate cooling for the component you OC.

If you know what you're doing, there is no risk, ..just bounderies (spelling? boundAries?).

Well unless i get an external temp monitor, the 6800XE doesnt have a temp sensor...

Unless u're very good with ur hands and wanna keep the case open. -.-

And yeah, couldve gotten better cooling....but hows about better cooling and a better card? :D I love my Powercolor 3850!!!

Well my 8800GTS 640MB OC's from 500/1200/1600 to 675/1600/2000 without a problem. It can probably go higher if I asked it nicely :p
It scores 4681 in 3dMark vantage (GPU score) :)

I would be very interested to know how it compares to a 8800gtx with that OC!

It's a bit slower due to less shader processors (only 96) but it comes close ;)
I was lucky because I got revision A3 (if I recall correctly from GPUz) which are known to be great overclockers :)
I wonder how long gainward's warrantee is? It's a year old in Aug...I wouldn't mind replacing its thermal paste with some Arctic Silver. Supposedly it drops temps by 5C to 10C... :)
