Looking to swap my insurance. I'm currently with Santam and paying almost R2k for insurance on 2 cars which is quite steep although I haven't had a problem claiming.

Who are the more reputable guys in the industry for cheaper insurance? I'm most worried about my claim getting repudiated for any stupid technicality the insurer can come up with.

What are your experiences with Mutual and Federal, Zurich, Alexander Forbes, Hollard and the like? I've only been with Santam.

I have had no problem claiming from outsurance for vehicle damage (own damage) and a stolen handbag. As long as you read the policy and don't breach any conditions, you should have no trouble claiming. Most insurance companies have clauses/excesses applicable to tracking devices not being tested/working and things like worn tyres. Also, make sure you always report the accident with a 3rd party to a police station within 48 hours. Outsurance did nail us with a huge premium increase after the claim though.

Santam did the same to me. Also when I call in to depreciate every year they normally increase the premium thereafter. So it's really getting expensive.

Get a quote from someone else, present it to Santam, they will either match it or beat it...

Be careful leaving Santam. It might be frying pan to fire. I am 100% happy with them, whatever they charge. Insurance is no longer cheap

At least Santam do not carry on like Medical companies, using any excuse whatever not to pay claims. I had a claim held up 9 months as, I discovered after many enquiries, they had not "verified my date of birth". I had been paying premiums for 13 years and my ID shows the DOB

I'm with First for Women. Paying R588 a month for car and household. About R160 a month cheaper than I did with Outsurance (read my solitary blog post :) )

What do you mean? Is it that bad with motor insurance too?

I've got a quote from Mutual and Federal and it's R500 cheaper and they'd said they can't better it or reduce my policy premium.

Then move...

They will very quickly change their tune when you ACTUALLY cancel....

I'm the owner of the car but my SO will be driving it 90% of the time. Would they still insure me?

Get quotes from M&F, Alexander Forbes, etc etc.. get at least 4 or 5 quotes...

Chose the one you like the most, then cancel with Santam... if they won't match or beat the quote they clearly don't need your business anymore.

Get a quotes from a broker. (Alexander Forbes is a broker)
Remember it's not always premium.
Named drivers
Overnight limitations
Excess's
etc etc

I really think it comes down to finding a decent broker.

I've been with quite a few people. Budget, a company I can't remember, Mi-way, Zurich, then another company I can't remember, then back to Zurich.

My general rule of thumb is if it's a company that gives you a quick quote on hippo, then they're too expensive.

Mi-way are tossers. They gave me a fairly reasonable premium with my second car. Really though I'd hit the jackpot back then. A year later, instead of my premiums coming down, they shot it up by R200. I called them and raged, and they gave me the most BS I've ever heard in my life. Back then I hadn't had any claims.

I was so upset with them that I found a broker and bailed. Saved quite a bit of money that way. I was paying less than what I was with Mi-way for Car and household insurance.

From there things went a bit arb. I bought a new car, and my premiums shot up. I really couldn't justify the cost. A friend referred me to a different broker who gave me a much better deal for R100 less, so I went with them.

About a month or so after that, another broker I'd contacted got back to me with a quote that was R200 cheaper than what I was paying, and they insure through Zurich (weird, still have no clue how I ended up back with them for a lot less than what I was paying).

I'm still with that broker and Zurich. Had one claim with them with my old car. No troubles at all.

Do M&F do car insurance alone? Or must it be bundled with home/contents insurance?
My current policy is with household and 2 cars. M&F quoted me on the same. Insuring with household seems to be reducing my premiums somehow.

I'm going to get a quote from Zurich but I need to find a broker in Durbs.

I used Kayser baird brokers in Durban. They got me on Santam but their quote was a good R300 cheaper than another brokers mutual and federal quote

You can also try Alexander Forbes, they saved me roughly R600 from what I had with Outsurance

Used to use Kayser Baird previously, and was very happy with their service, will more than likely be moving back to them again in the future.

Sometimes you have to play hard ball with these insurance companies. Threaten to leave their insurance company if you don't get your way. They will be happy if you pay R1000 insurance premium every month for 10 years while your car's value devalues. Normally premiums must be relooked at once a year, meaning premium amounts must decrease once a year. Insurance companies will never lower your premium if you don't say anything.

I think you should play hard ball, instead of seeking services from a broker. Doing it yourself teaches you how to be tough when negotiating. :)
