Hi everyone

At the moment I'm seriously starting to re-evaluate my internet setup at home, and I think that maybe I have the wrong line type in etc. Would like some advice please. I'm also having issues just getting my router to sync, but I'm trying to sort that now (logged with ISP, Telkom and testing with another router today)

I've got a 2mbps uncapped line with Cybersmart. On which I do some downloading (either during the night or while I'm at work), but I stop the downloads when I actively want to do something, like watch some YouTube or play a game of DotA 2. I haven't had problems with YouTube, but I am unable to keep a stable connection during Dota 2, with me disconnecting from the game within 5 minutes of entering. Leading to a lot of frustration.

My downloads are probably in the range of about 40gb per month. Which isn't heavy after taking a look at some of the other users on the forum:p

My concern is that my uncapped line is shaped. This probably means that my gaming connection gets low priority, right?

I'm considering keeping an uncapped account (with Cybersmart or elsewhere) at a speed of about 1mbps, and then getting a smaller, capped, unshaped account with which to do my gaming. Also at 1mbps, which in my experience should be enough. That way I can pay the same (or even a bit less) and my woes should be solved?

Afrihost 100gb capped account R399 a month , its unshaped.

Or 50gb for R285 a month , 70 Gb for 299.

Thats just the data price.

Thanks, been looking at Afrihost, they're really good with their prices. And with that amount of capped I can still do everything I want, and be unshaped.

Hmmm, ponderous.

Forgot to mention, their CEO is a helpdesk agent, dont have time to increase capacity with I.S.

A CEO that spends so much time getting involved in his company is seldom seen. Keoma loves what he does, and does a damn good job at it.

Go troll somewhere else.

You forgot to remove this, you are replying to somethinr thats not visible;

Hi There,
To try and give my input to your query and ignore the comments above.
If you are downloading and reach your cap then you are going to be throttled and that probably accounts for the timeouts on the gaming which is overseas traffic and will be throttled.
I would suggest that you look at an unshaped product. At home I use the Afrihost small business 1MB unshaped and it costs about R400 per month. We are getting good download speeds all day and I use it for VoIP during working hours although I do make sure that I then have the line to myself.

Regards

Tim

Thanks Tim

I've since tried testing my line with a friend's router, and it seems to have improved. Cybersmart is going to give me a call after hours to try and sort out my gaming connection. So once they've assisted me and I've got a new router, I should be good to go.

If my gaming traffic does not improve, I'll need to look at an unshaped account. Can't really blame the ISP when I know I signed up for a shaped service.
