Best ISP with free installation (>8 meters) on Openserve?

Openserve went live in my area last week and I'm looking to change over from Octotel. I stay in Cravenby in Cape Town.

I'm with Cool Ideas/Octotel currently but Cool Ideas only offer free installation for the first 8 meters of cabling on Openserve. I'd need like 20 meters as the Openserve pole is far from my house. No complicated trenching needed.

Any recommendations on the best ISP's that offer free installation for Openserve? I'm looking at Afrihost currently. Possibly Websquad.

Reliability and low latency for gaming is key. Would appreciate input for this decision.

The 8 meters is for trenched roll out.

For Aerial roll outs I have yet to see a client being charged.

I have been happy with Afrihost since the day I started with them and have not looked back. Get 3-4ms to local Dota servers, 25ms to BF2042 servers and generally never have any issues when gaming.

Thanks - that's what the Cool Ideas rep told me as well but their support center was preparing a quote for me (likely >R2000).

8m rule only applies to trenching (if it’s necessary). Aerial installs don’t have any limits we’ve seen.

I’ll ask them for the actual quote but below is the latest reply from Cool Idea’s customer support:

“Please be advised that according to the feedback that we have received from Openserve yes there is an additional cost for anything further than 8m and this was confirmed by our service manager at Openserve.”

The support team is aware no trenching will be needed as it’s an aerial cable.

I was asked to give an exact required meterage before the quote could be sent. This is a bit hard to do as the Openserve pole, where the cable will originate from, is very high and well beyond my reach. My best estimate using measuring tools where I could is 20m in total.

I saw on an ISP’s website that the typical cost per meter beyond 8m is about R180 or so. Multiplying this by 12m would give me a figure of more than R2000.

I think you are getting ahead of yourself here. Aerial doesn't have extra charge.

The quote will be if any will given to you on the date of your installation appointment after the Openserve contractor has assessed what is required.
 
Not sure how I'm getting ahead of myself? I thought my question about installation costs was reasonable and posed at the time I logged an Openserve installation request with CI support. They told me in writing I should prepare for an extra fee.

I asked them beforehand about having a site assessment done for the quote, but CI support went down the path of asking me for exact meterage so they could apply it to the cost per meter given to them by Openserve to calculate my fee.

At the end of the day, I didn't want to end up in a scenario when they come out, give me a high quote for installation and I then turn it down, where the alternative would be to just move to an ISP that covers installation in the first place. Thereby avoiding delays altogether.

I am checking with the team but as per our DM I don't believe we have ever had to charge. It's typically around the terms offered around the FNO, most people don't know the install is over 8m. You are aware and in so saying so the response will be as per Openserves terms.

But you won't be charged without warning either, there would be a quote if it was the case. So place the order if you are happy and there is a highly likely chance you won't be billed anything.
 
I have OS aerial and the router is almost 30m from the pole. No additional fees were charged.

I'm with Afrihost but as mentioned above I don't think ISP has anything to do with it.

Same, ours are roughly 40 metres from pole to ONT and wasn’t charged anything extra with Openserve Aerial.
 
im across the road in parow

i signed up last week thursday with mweb

yesterday the guys came out installed everything

2hours later i was up and running

the 25mb line is R499
 
My Vuatel aerial connection is probably 25m from the pole to the ONT, no extra charge on installation. They ran the cable to the house, through the ceiling & were done in less than an hour.

General question - does Openserve have back-up power supplies to run their network when load-shedding happens?

@I.am.Sam - I presume Openserve went live for you around the same time as me then? i.e. about two weeks ago? Have you done tests on your line to see if the network runs efficiently in our neck of the woods?

Openserve generally have great power backup because they use those massive exchanges they own nationally- usually with gen sets and UPS.. So backup power isn’t really an issue.

In terms of performance; their network is rock solid- we see some PPP sessions that have 30+ days on them (and we’ve seen longer).

i moved here last week lol

the speed is perfectly fine
