I have a Hp notebook. 1.4ghz, 40gig hhd, 512ram. What would be the best Linux to run on it and where can I get it??

Thanx

with those old specs, Gentoo. First change your HD though, that one will bomb out and leave you in tears after all the configuring and compiling from source code.

Wow!! You can tell that just from seeing 40gb HDD. I wish I had your skills. :p

My boss uses Gentoo for mostly everything - from what I see, it works very well with good 'modules' added (shorewall, squid etc)

Agreed on the HDD though. Best to get a new HDD and rest assured that it will last you a couple of years and not months.

Nothing is as frustrating as taking time and effort to set up an operating system to work just the way you want it to work, and the HDD bombs out, taking all your work with it.

Gentoo compile times on that would scare me right off, I have a similar spec laptop.

Any linux that uses a light WM manager like Openbox etc would be fast on that laptop, hell even XFCE should be OK. If you want out of the box then look at crunchbag linux etc

If you are ok with doing a bit of terminal install Arch Linux and add what you need seeing Arch is a base install without all the things like X, ALSA etc. It's not hard at all if you follow the beginners guide and at the end of the day you end up with a personalised & custom linux distro that is unique to you. Similar to Gentoo but without the compiling time crap.

Anyone who answers any linux question with the word "Gentoo" should be shot.

If Chuck1 is asking he's clearly new to the world of linux. Why not encourage him with something that he can use and learn from, before throwing him into the deep end with Gentoo?

So Chuck1, don't listen to these beards. Rather go for ubuntu which you can get here (700mb download). Tho the hdd advice is also useful.

Ubuntu (or Kubuntu/*buntu) is a good choice for a 1st Linux install - go for it and let us know how it went?

I have a machine with 1.3Ghz and rest as your specs--and it runs Xubuntu just fine. The newer 9.04 has a few tweaks that optimizes the desktop experience for lower spec machines--give it a try.

Thanx. I have ubunto (says easy peezy at startup) and it runs fine, I boot it from my usb because it doesnt want to install. Just wondering what would be the best linux. Or where can I get the neewest ubuntu?
