Hi, I'm purchasing an Intel E8500 next week and was wondering what motherboard would best compliment it performance wise.
I'm looking in the region of +- R 1500.
I'm not interested in all that power saving features and other bells and whistles. Just want the best performance motherboard and reliability obviously.
On board graphics not needed.
Any thoughts?

Asus P5K or P5K Deluxe (which I have) will suffice. I run my E8400 on it with no problems whatsoever :)

Stay away from Biostar, my advice.

The Asus P5Q is a stunning board, has the same features and is cheaper than that Biostar.

If you stay within the Asus and Gigabyte range of motherboard, you can't go wrong. Both "manufacturers" are great.

Let me explain some more. I have been a BIG supporter and advocator for ASUS for the last couple of years, but I've been hearing more and more
complaints on their latest MID-RANGE boards. Reviews on the internet seems
to confirm this.

My choices where between the following boards:

Intel® Cube Cove (Executive Series)
Intel® Icedale P45ID (Media Series)
Intel® P45SG Skyburg (Extreme Series)
GIGABYTE® "S Series" P43 & ICH10 Express Chipset
GIGABYTE® "S Series" G43 & ICH10
GIGABYTEЁ "S Series" N650SLI MCP Chipset
ASUS P5QL-E , with EPU-6
ASUS P5Q SE , with EPU-4
ASUS P5Q-VM , with EPU-4
ASUS P5Q SE/R , with EPU-4
ASUS P5Q , with EPU-6
ASUS P5N-Delux : with EPU
MSI Intel G43 & ICH10
MSI Intel P45 & ICH10
BIOSTAR MB INTEL P45 + ICH10 (TPOWER I45)

After reading numerous reviews on these boards and taking my needs (legacy support etc.) and budget into consideration, the biostar was the most attractive. I'm not saying it's the best board around, but it seems stable, realiable (yes a reliable biostar MB, just read the reviews on newegg) and not overloaded with bells and whistles which I almost never use and can sometimes be a the cause of major headaches.
The board also has 2 x PCI-E x 16 2.0 slots which would be make the price much higher on other manafacturer's boards.
Also has the P45 chipset which is a plus and great overclocking potential.

Some Quotes:

"BIOSTAR is a name that's been around for some time now however the name usually brings up images of cheap motherboards that are usually far from what the enthusiast crowd would consider viable for their own machines. However BIOSTAR decided to enter the enthusiast market and try and change everyone's perception about their products."

"BIOSTAR has another winner on its hands with the T-Power I45. I will no longer turn my nose up to BIOSTAR motherboards as the company has given us reason to consider it a serious player in the enthusiast motherboard market in North America."

"On first glance the Biostar TPower I45 motherboard has the appearence of a standard mid-range enthusiast friendly platform, but it's not until you start overclocking that it's true potential becomes apparent (as we'll see later in the review). Based on Intel's new and very popular P45 Express
and ICH10R chipsets, this motherboard supports all Socket 775 Intel processors running on a FSB of 800/1066/1333/1600MHz bus - that's Pentium D right through to the latest Core 2 Quad processor."

"Pros: Price. Easy to setup. Temp readout. Fit nicely with my Intel E8500. Easy to overclock!!! Never owned a Biostar before, always an Asus fan, and I'm now sold on Biostar."

In the end, I know I can't just rely on reading random reviews to judge a product, so I will give some
feedback as soon as I get my rig up and running, currently still awaiting delivery.
